BUG some subtitles not showing

I think I've found a bug - these are showing up on iOS and web player but not in PC (PlexConnect)

I'm on PMS 0.9.7.28 (OS X), ATV2 5.3, PC commit 7eeafb068e6cc2e8690403dec4efa4f55d5aa2c1

Tried latest commit as well - same problem.

Just tested them out using the latest PlexConnect and PMS 0.9.8.1 and they work fine, so this could be a PMS bug with 0.9.7.27 do you have access to the latest PMS?

Also note that external subs will only work if the file is transcoded. If the file is an ATV native format like mp4 or m4v with h.264 and is direct played without transcoding then external subs wont work. If the file is a native format then you can test this by setting Force Transcode to True and then see if the subs show.

No, no plex pass.

I just tested with forcing transcoding and sure thing subs show up. Well, this is kinda silly feature...

Thanks for help!

Not a "silly feature", just a current limitation until I add in subtitle rendering. For the moment the 2 options you have are 1) Use force transcode or 2) use a program like subler to merge your subs into the video file.

I see.

I thought this feature to be problem on PMS side nad had no idea PlexConnect should do subtitle rendering. Most of my files are iTunes compatible they just aren't Plex compatible - in another words they're not optimised for streaming. The video in question IS optimised and that seems to be the problem.

What I don't understand is this - if I select external subtitle from the pre-play screen and the file is Plex optimised it shouldn't PMS use HLS? Or is this logic, on the contrary, implemented on PlexConnect side?

And sure enough, I have just Plex optimised the other MP4 video with external subs for testing purposes and that broke showing ext subs.

Basically there are 3 different cases:-

1. If the file has to be transcoded by PMS to play then the external subs will be burnt into the video stream and will show up under PlexConnect.

2. If the file is direct played, ie it isn't transcoded by PMS, then the external subs need to be sent to the atv as a separate stream and it's up to PlexConnect to render them, however at the moment PlexConnect has no sub rendering feature.

3. The only other case is a native non transcoded file that has subs muxed into it, these should be natively supported by the atv much like iTunes content by holding the select button during playback and selecting the subs.
