Is the genre for the artist taken from an online database or from my own file metadata? If, for example, Artist X has 3 albums, one of which is of genre rock, one pop, one jazz, will the artist inherit all three genres?
I’m pretty sure that is exactly what happens. I hate to disagree with @anon18523487, but the artist genres always match perfectly with the combined genres from the albums on my system. I have the option disabled to download genres disabled, if that makes a difference.
Interesting. I just checked the genres on my disk for one artist, and each album happened to be of a different genre. Each of these album genres appeared correctly on Plex, but the artist genres were ‘Rock, Metal’, so Plex in my case appears to be getting those genres online (from Last.fm or AllMusic, I guess). Can you show me where to find the setting to disable this?
I have a Plex Pass Premium Music Library, but I wouldn’t think that is relevant
You can disable the genres for Last.FM under the Agents settings for both Albums and Artists. You can configure what extra information Last.FM will download.there. Click the little gear icon for Last.FM
Settings >> Agents >> Artists >> Last.fm
I also have “Local Media Assets” in the top position, above Last.fm, so Plex is supposed to use the embedded metadata first, then supplement with extra information from the agents.
Plex has a habit of refusing to update local metadata, so you might have to Plex Dance the Albums to see a change. Plex Dance info: The Plex Dance ™
I doubt it will fix your “bug” that the genre selection isn’t maintained when you switch from Album to Artist. The filters appear to be reset as @anon18523487 said earlier.
just curious, if you’ve found the time to double check, are the artist genres not supposed to inherit the genres from the albums, but only use online information? I haven’t been able to find an artist in my library that seems to use any online information in my library. The artist genres seem to be always inherited from the albums, and the album genres are actually inherited from the combined genres of the individual tracks within the album
The only exception is “Various Artists” used for compilation albums, where there are no genres associated with the generic artist title, which makes sense.
I hope this isn’t a bug that’s going to get fixed, because I like the way it works right now.
