Bugs with Extras for Music content

When adding Extras for music with the recommended naming as mentioned on the plex website it does not get shown in the library.

e.g. steps, folder structure and file names and when it doesnt work:

Case 1: extras get scanned after the soundtrack already was scanned and added to plex

Step 1: The following folders and files get added to the plexlibrary

D:\PlexLibrary\Music\Artist\Album\01 - Title.m4a

Step 2: Run Library Scan

if i later decide to add the Live music video or concert or any type of artist/music video it will not show up after rescan

Step 3: Add Music or artist video

D:\PlexLibrary\Music\Artist\Album\01 - Title.m4a
D:\PlexLibrary\Music\Artist\Album\01 - Title-lyrics.mp4

Step 4: Run Library Scan

Expected behavior > Artist and music videos get added to plex as Extras under the artist and music videos get linked to the soundtrack

Current behavior > Artist and music videos DONT get added to plex as Extras

Workaround: Remove Artist/album folder from library > Run Library scan > Move Artist/Album folder back > Run Library scan > Artist and music videos show up under extras in plex

Case 2: when the file name of artist video doesnt have the same name as a soundtrack file

Step 1: add soundtrack and Artist/music video at the same time because of bug case 1 and based on recommended naming from plex website

Expected behavior > all extras get added for the artist

current behavior > only the videos that match a soundtrack filename get added

the others DONT get added as Extras

So using the following recommended naming for Inline Artist videos doesnt work:

  • Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext

But using the recommended naming for Inline Music videos works

  • Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/Track_Filename - Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext

“Refresh Metadata” instead of “Scan Library Files”.

These cannot be associated with an album, only with the artist. So they go into the global music video folder, insterad of the album folder.

okay refreshing metadata works for case 1 but i dont see why it shouldnt just associate automatically when it detects the new file and that is correctly named during scan.
should be possible.

and for case 2 im using the inline method as documented and dont have a global music video folder setup

Try refreshing metadata on the Artist level, instead of on the Album level.

if the filename is just a description it doesnt get added even if i refresh the metadata or remove and readd everything like i mentioned

if i rename in this example ‘Saxon Pub Dec 29, 2014-live.mp4’ to ‘02 - Medicine-live.mp4’ it gets added under extras

Move the video out of the album folder into the artist folder.

well that works but sometimes youd still want some videos inside an album for e.g live videos or interviews about a certain album and some without any specific album associated in the artist folder

or else if for an artist there are a lot of extras it gets very hard to keep track if everything has to be in the same spot in the artist folder

still moving it to the artist folder wasnt mentioned and the mentioned method in the support documentation doesnt work so its still a problem with plex server

but as a workaround im glad i can make it work like this

Associating a general video with an album is not possible. It is only possible to associate a video with a particular track.

i meant just having it inside the album folder but associated to the artist

either the documentation has an error and should be fixed and extended or the server has the issue that it doesnt work anymore with the documented folders and naming

ive noticed that the videotypes for artist videos also work when associated to a track but documentation only mentions -lyrics and -video to work with a track

so this works:

  • Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/Track_Filename - Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext
    Where -Video_Type is -lyrics (lyrics music video) -video (regular music video) (Documented)
  • Where -Video_Type is -behindthescenes (behind the scenes) -concert (concert performance) -interview (artist interview) -live (live music video) -lyrics (lyrics music video -video (regular music video) (Not Documented)
  • Music/Artist_Name/Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext (Not Documented)

but this doesnt work

  • Music/Artist_Name/Album_Name/Descriptive_Name-Video_Type.ext (Documented but not working)

and auto associate extras could be done automatically when detecting a new file during scan
i dont necessarily want to refresh my whole library or artist
if i had for example matched some stuff manually which can happen more often with asian soundtracks it would have been lost

i would prefer for it if it would just work inside albums like mentioned in the documentation as well and it would auto associate to the artist or associate to the track if names match
and auto add on new file scan without refresh to not lose manual matches

then it would work flexibly for all use cases no matter how someone sorts their artist/music video files, it would correctly associate to the artist or track and you wouldnt lose manual matches informations

i would have to test if this used to work as documented with an older plex-server version
i can do that another day and let you know

I am also facing this issue. It is written in the documentations that extra videos in an album directory can be found, but that is definitely not what is going on right now. The suggestion by @OttoKerner to move them out of the album directory and into the artist directory works, but that will just end up cluttering the directory. I’d like to be able to browse my file structure and find related extras in the appropriate albums, instead of having them sprawled out like a pseudo-global music video directory.

Since it is already possible for music videos and lyrics to be scanned in the album directory, the other extras should also be identifiable. I hope this gets recognised as a bug and is fixed soon.

Will those get fixed or do the devs know about this issue?

Its kind of not obvious to see if they know about it or not or how to report bugs specifically to the plex devs besides just creating a forum topic
