Is it possible to run Plex Media Server on the Firestick 4K (like can be done on the Nvidia Shield)? I don’t see it listed in the available apps. Maybe it can be sideloaded? Any guides? Google searches only found people talking about installing the Plex client on Firestick. Thanks all.
Sorry It cannot.
Thanks for the quick answer! That’s a shame. Can you please let me know what some of the cheaper / more compact (a stick version if possible) media players are out there that can run Plex Media Server and support 4K HDR (transcoding not needed)? For instance I know the Nvidia Shield can, but its more than I want to spend and trying to find something more basic. The Firestick 4K device is a good example, except of course for the fact that it can’t use PMS.
There are not any over the shelf players that it can install.
You can install the Linux Arm version on an rPi which are like $40 or so for basic ones. (We don’t have any “official” support for RPi devices though). Obviously they require a bit of Linux know how in order to do it. We do not provide specific instructions as you should be familiar with Linux to do so but i have seen websites with specific instructions for RPi and similar devices.
If you are curious about Linux at all it can be a fun way to learn with something like that.
The cool thing about Plex is that you don’t need your server to be your media player. They can be totally separate. The Firestick 4k is an awesome budget Plex client. Separately you can run the Plex Media Server on an old laptop or cheap single board computer (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Atomic Pi, Thin Client)
Personally I’ve found that an Atomic Pi + External Hard Drive make for a great small footprint setup that doesn’t take up too much space plugged in near your router. The Atomic Pi can technically run Windows but you’d be much better off learning a bit of Linux. It’ll stretch the already limited resources a lot further.
And I 100% agree with @BigWheel. Setting it up can be a great learning experience if you’re someone who likes to tinker. I’d never used Linux before I set up my Atomic Pi powered Plex Server and now fast forward a few years and it’s the OS of choice on all my computers!
