Can only view subtitles from online sources

Server Version#: 1.16.1.1291
Player Version#:

Hi,

I have just realised I can no longer select the subtitle file that is sitting alongside my media (exact same name as for .mp4 but with .srt) and can only choose from online sources.

When did this change or have I tweaked a setting by accident?

I have not included the player version as I see this behaviour on both my Apple TV and Plex Web (so multiple players).

thanks,
James.

The last time this worked I was on v 1.15 but have not needed them in a while so not sure how helpful that is.

Here are my screenshots…

I believe you need to rename your .srt files to .en.srt and then you will be able to select them.

Hi Mark,

Thanks, but that made no difference.

cheers,
J.

Another thing to check is that you have local media asset (TV) enabled in your settings / agents for your TV library. You should also rescan the library so it detects the change.

Hi,

Thanks, but that wasn’t it either.

You need title.lang.srt,
e.g. Avatar (2009).en.srt

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200471133-adding-local-subtitles-to-your-media/

I have 100% understanding of how files need to be named in Plex. Have used sidecar subs (and embedded subs) for ages. I am now seeing this as well… local subs are not being picked up by Plex.

thanks.

When did this change? … Avatar (2009).srt used to work for me and it just stopped (I assume in a new release of PMS)…

cheers!

It’s always been this way as long as I’ve been with Plex.

The page had a minor formatting change in February of this year.

It’s at least formally been that long.

All I can say is that I have been using Plex for 2-3 years and my subtitle files (.srt not .en.srt) have always worked fine.

…so something has changed.

It’s not an issue; I have just modified them all to .en.srt.

cheers,
J.

I’ve always had them as *.en.srt because I also have *.de.srt which is correct for multi-language sub usage.

makes sense.

But that doesn’t changes the fact that .srt (without .xx before it) has always worked up until recently. It was always described as “unknown” by Plex, (presumably because of no .xx) but it worked nevertheless

Ah. thanks. I can look into that.
I do know all the scanners were rewritten and moved internal to PMS. Python is no longer used.

I would start by looking at the local media logs right after a scan with new files and see if it is even running. (meaning the log has a time stamp from the time of scan) and when new files are added see if the scanner log even shows that it sees them.

Not sure what was happening to me a few nights ago, but this problem seems to have resolved itself. Local subs are now available for selection.

Just to make it clear there’s no “hidden” issues with this…

I had setup a fresh install of Plex and realized I had “local media assets” deselected for all agents… which is why sidecar subs weren’t appearing. The subs that were appearing were embedded which is why I was seeing inconsistencies. Sorry for the false alarm.

Sorry - just seen this. Thanks, guys.

yes, resolved itself for me too. …something strange was going on.
