can rasplex handle direct stream / play of bluray-quality mkv?

Sorry if this is a repeat question. I have been searching but most of the info I have found seems to predate the release of the 2B.

I am planning to rip my bluray collection to mkv. I want to do this losslessly so unfortunately that means vc-1 with bitrates up to 30 mbps, lossless audio, etc.

Trying to figure out what client I can use to play them back. I have tested playback on my tivo bolt and my ps3, both require some sort of transcoding (confirmed by looking at the task manager on my server) and it results in choppy playback. Playback is flawless when I use plex home theater on my macbook, but that is not a permanent solution obviously. Can I expect the same on rasplex, which I understand is essentially a port of PHT?

TIA

I’ve used a Pi2 with RasPlex and had no issue with 1:1 bluray rips with lossless audio. For VC1 you’ll need to buy the license but once it’s there it plays just fine.

yes a pi2 with rasplex, or, indeed, PMP will play those MKVs. You will need the VC1 and mpeg license from raspberry pi to play that two file types: http://www.raspberrypi.com/license-keys/

Yes it can, make sure it’s an RPi2 with a good power supply providing at least 2A, if its the type that uses a USB to micro USB also make sure the USB cable is also a good quality one. You also need a Class 10 SD card, 4Gb will suffice, Sandisk Extreme are recommended.

I’d also recommend that you do this with your RPi hooked to a hardwired network connection. I found many Wifi adapters struggle with the RPi and can cause stuttering/pauses during playback. It could just be my crappy luck but I’ve seen lots of people with similar issues/posts.

Thanks everyone for the quick and helpful answers.

Quick follow up… are we sure that 4GB will be large enough If I enable metadata caching / prefetch / whatever it is called?

Plenty big enough, you can use bigger if you have one handy.
