Cannot access any media after version 1.40.0.7998 update

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7998
Player Version#: Apple TV 8.31 (and other clients)
After upgrading my Plex Media server on my Mac Sonoma 14.31 (M2 Mac mini) I am no longer able to view any of my video content. I get the error message that “Something went wrong - An unexpected error occurred.”

I am also having this issue but on my MAC Mini after the update to 1.40.0.7998, no internet or network connection.

I get the error connection when I try to access the server via my Browser

OS: Ventura 13.6.4
HTPC: 1.55.1.4-1c93c60c

Sorry to hear that! I feel your pain. I am sure we are not the only two people who are experiencing this. I was lucky to have a Time Machine backup, and I stoped Plex, and restored (replaced) everything in:

~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media

That did the trick! All back to working. Then I went to the Plex server update and clicked on “Skip This Version”. Learned my lesson and will wait a few weeks before ever installing a newly released update.

I never use the Download link due to the lack of delays and errors, Always DL it from the site so you have a copy of the last ver. so you can revert back just in case there is an issue such as this.

That is a great practice and I will follow from now.

Also having this issue this morning after the update.

The issue for me is I don’t have time machine installed on my Mini as I use it only as a media server.

Looks like I will now definitely have that setup once this issue is fixed.

Anyone know where I can source previous versions of Plax Server?

I’m experiencing this as well.

I tried all the methods of download and install. (Update and fresh install)

Plex is broken on 1.40.0.7998 update

I have old versions from my TM, happy to transfer. Will it break if you get the wrong preference file loaded with the wrong installed dated app? (hope that makes sense) either way let me know what date you’ve got and I’ll do my best to track back and give you the closest in time version to this.

But the new release update isn’t an untested Alpha it should be working or not released until it is test and shown to be working. Anyway, the direct download from the Plex downloads page produces the same results - breaking Plex libraries.
If we can’t trust any update or new version are we all going to be stuck on the pre Feb 2024 version forever?

I notice that there is a version of Server on the site, it’s version is 1.86.1.4076-a3ab94 and it’s dated at Feb 3, 2024.

I really have no issues with going right back to square one and rebuild the libraries etc, I only use TV and Movies and they are all on my NAS.

If you ever come across any tools for repairing a library that would be really helpful. I’m just getting people saying that the “update is fine for me” even though it’s clearly breaking a lot of people’s libraries. If we can repair things on the new updates or if Plex doesn’t fix their problem we’ll have to repair a library.
I’ve got too much time invested to start over.

I am having similar problem. After update, I create a library for photos, add the approriate folder and scan, analyse, remove and repeat but no success. Have checked permissions etc. No luck. Any help appreciated.

Please provide server logs (this link explains where to find them).

Without logs we cannot diagnose what is causing your issue.

It’s broken. You’re only option is to restore
The preference file, the media server folder and the app from before the update. I’ve used Time Machine and had to go back before February

PlexLogs_150224.zip (19.6 KB)

Attached are the logs from today’s reboot.

Using MacOS Ventura 13.6.4

Thanks! We’ll take a look and get back to you.

Would you be able to DM me your database?

We suspect it might be existing database corruption that is causing a migration to fail, but cannot be 100% sure unless we can see the database.

Can you advise where in MacOS this is situated?

I go to ~/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server, but do you want the whole folder or just one of the sub-folders?

I am interested in understanding if there is a process / utility that Plex makes available to analyze and repair corrupt database files? My update did not go well at all, and I had to restore from a backup. But now I am very fearful of updating to any new version of Plex that requires changes to databases (as was described in the 1.40.0.7998 update).
