Cannot access Plex outside home network

Server Version#:Synology NAS DS218+
Player Version#:4.86.1

I cannot access the plex website on my laptop or mobile phone outside of my home network. I cannot even log into the plex forums !

I have remote access enabled.

any help would be appreciated thanks

Remote access can be tricky depending on your home network setup, router configuration and ISP. However if you cannot even access the Plex forum / web app, this means there might be something else going on with the network configuration of those clients (laptop, mobile phone).

  • As for remote access troubleshooting → The Basics of Remote Access Troubleshooting
  • As for the client network access… are those devices connecting to the network through some VPN or other security apps/tools/components? Any special DNS configuration on those devices?

thank you for your reply . I havent got a vpn running nor have I modified the router in any way.

Everything was fine until I updated to synolgy DSM 7 and had to do the plex fixes as everything stopped working!

since then it is all downhill and I even purchased a lifetime plex pass

thanks

I was referring to the configuration of the laptop / mobile phone as those cannot access the server from outside your home network (or even the Plex forum).
Can those devices access your server from inside your home network?

If the change / issue is related to upgrading to DSM 7… have you enabled any special network configuration on the Syno (e.g. Synology’s DDNS, some NAS specific firewall configuration…)?

Hi tom

yes I can access plex in my house via home network fine.

Its when I access from any other way it will not do it.

To my knowledge I have not enabled anything different with my NAS but the synology DSM update was a disaster and stopped plex working completely!

I then had to install the beta version and re organise my filing system as per the you tube video to get it working.

best verify that… DSM7 has some significant changes.

Not sure what Youtube video you found – just as reference for anybody finding this thread… here’s a link to the verified guide on how to handle the DSM6->7 migration with a Plex Media Server.

thanks for the great reply Tom

I will go though that step by step

To my knowledge yes I had DSM 6.0 when I installed my plex app via snyology apps store

I then kept getting bothered by synology to upgrade to DSM 7 and when I did my plex apps on my tv’s and mobile said "server not available "

So I went on you tube and watched the video on how to re organise your library to make DSM 7.0 work with plex beta.
Since then I have had many issues with networking and audio problems with the LG tv for example.

Which video?

There are many, and many of them give poor advice.

this one - to be fair to the guy got my system back up and running .

@thejonesboy

If you have PMS BETA 1.21.0-3744 installed, I urge you to complete the upgrading to current PMS 1.27.x.

PMS 1.21.0-3744 was written for BETA DSM 7.

After DSM 7 became final release, 1.21.0.3744 will not work correctly very long.

( I spent several weeks ‘chasing’ DSM 7 updates until it stabilized and was finally able to achieve stability with 1.24.2.4973 )

hi chuck

should I upgrade ot the latest dms as well?

Is this the update from the plex site to install into the nas

thanks

Jim

I have a message server update 1.27.2.5929 is available

should I use this?

The sequence to use:

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Upgrade DSM to current version for your machine.
  3. After it upgrades, if it doesn’t restart then manually restart it yourself.
  4. When it’s back up, Download and install 1.27.2

NOTE: while upgrading from 1.21.0-3744,

IF you have a lot of media indexed already

  • It will take time to finish the task
  • It will sit at “Updating…” in Package Center.
  • DON’T INTERRUPT it.

What it’s doing is moving your metadata from the hidden Beta location to the new, visible, PlexMediaServer shared folder.

Interrupting it would require we SSH into the machine and fix it manually.

AFTER you’ve got it all updated, we’ll find out and fix (if it’s not the ISP) your Remote Access.

installed everything

latest DSM

and latest plex

all seems well - yes it is indexing all of the server media

thank you

Remote Access working?

Thanks
