Cannot connect to Server locally, able to connect on iOS only periodically

Server Version#: 1.41.0.8992-60008992
Player Version#: Various
Synology info: DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 7
DS918+
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

I’ve tried my best to find a similar issues posted here and on reddit. So far nothing has solved my issue.

So basically, started having some issues a few days ago. Went into the 32400 portal, and tried to uncheck the remote connection on and off. As soon as I toggled it off, the menu disappeared and I have been entirely unable to reconnect to the server that way. Now after that I then tried several fixes found both here and on reddit. So far nothing working yet. Reboots have usually fixed any issue, not this time. Tried reinstalling Plex and upgrading it and downgrading it. Still can’t connect. Tried playing with the IP and DNS settings. Didn’t fix it.

So thru all of this I was able to stream the server on the iOS app, other connections did not work consistently. Sometimes the Apple TV app would show up with “transient server ######” listed under the libraries. This was inconsistent, but when this didn’t show, casting to Plex from my from still worked.

The last thing I tried was attempting to drop and reclaim the server, and to little surprise, still can’t connect locally, but now I also cannot connect thru the iOS app anymore.

These were some of the help I tried:

So attempting more troubleshooting here. I do have a second NAS here, DS1819+. I am able to connect to Plex on that. Same network. So the issue must be with my DS918+. Attempting to run Emby has the same issue as Plex on there. I cannot connect to the local ip:32400/web or emby equivalent.

Please verify Synology settings, then supply a set of server log files.

Verify Network & Time Settings

  1. Verify the IP address & mask are correct.
  2. Verify the default gateway is correct (usually the Internet router)
  3. Use a public DNS server such as 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8 (Google), or 9.9.9.9 (Quad9)
  4. Synchronize the NAS with a public NTP server. Control Panel → Regional Options → Time

Plex Media Server Log Files

  1. Stop Plex Media Server, wait 1 minute.
  2. Start Plex Media Server.
  3. Wait 3 minutes for PMS to fully start and log the startup sequence.
  4. Stop Plex Media Server, wait 1 minute.
  5. With File Station, navigate to the Plex Data Folder.
  6. Right click on the Logs directory and choose “compress to logs.zip.”
  7. Download and attach to thread.

One additional item…

  1. Go to your list of Authorized Devices and sort for servers.

  2. Remove any entries for servers that no longer exist.

  3. Do not remove your current servers. Doing so will unclaim them.

Just checked all that again, resynced the time.

Here are the logs.

Logs.zip (2.2 MB)

Too late on the unclaiming server, one of the threads I came across suggested that could fix it. So the server is currently unclaimed now. I do not have any other servers attached, it was the only one. I do have two servers shared with me, but they are not mine.

Thanks for the log files.

You have your media files stored in the Plex Data Folder. That is not supported and can cause Plex to not work correctly. That is why there are messages in six languages saying “do not place media files here” (or words to that effect).

You must move your media files to a new location.

For example, make a new shared folder, /media, with subfolders for movies, tv shows, concerts, etc.

Once you have moved the media files, stop / start Plex Media Server.

Then try to claim the server.

From a system on the same network, use a private/incognito browser window pointed at the IP address of the NAS: http://192.168.1.5:32400/web.

Do not use QuickConnect, a domain name, etc. Such methods will not work.
The private window bypasses any browser extensions that might get in the way.

See if you can login and reach server settings.

So moved the media files and folders. Those had been there for 6 years but the files I actually used are in a separate volume from the server install. But obviously a stupid thing to do in the first place.

But nothing changed, still unable to load http://192.168.1.5:32400/web
And not using QuickConnect or a domain name. Even clicking the link directly from package center making sure I’m not mistyping won’t load it.

Also to be clear, when I start Plex on my other NAS, I am able to load the 32400 page using the same browser with no issue. But I don’t run my server on that one, I only checked that to diagnose where to look. It worked on the now not working one right up until I unchecked the remote connection toggle, with the intention to recheck it immediately.

And thank you very much for the help so far.

You get nothing? Like Plex is not running?

Is the firewall enabled on the NAS?

If so, try disabling it.

Not sure why I didn’t think of that or why it suddenly broke, but disabling the firewall got me in. Server reclaimed and it seems to be working fully again. I’ll just add some rules to it now to let Plex work.

Thank you very much for the help.

Glad you have things working.

Here’s the list of ports to allow through the Synology firewall: What network ports do I need to allow through my firewall?

The only port you need to forward in the router is TCP/32400, and only if you want remote access.

FYI, if you ever update from DSM 6 to 7, first read FAQ 27 - Migrating an existing PMS from DSM 6 to DSM 7. Synology forced a lot of changes with DSM 7. It is not as simple as installing a new version of PMS.
