Cannot get Plex / AppleTV / Synology to work together

I have:

  • Two AppleTVs at two different locations, both ATV3
  • Two different Synology NAS servers at the two locations
  • Use Plex Media Server at both locations
  • A Lifetime Pass to Plex

The system has worked fine for several years, but Plex just stopped working at Location 1 with my AppleTV 3 + Synology DS216+II (Intel Celeron N3060) NAS. I’ve set and reset permissions in Synology. Plex on my Mac finds the Synology NAS and displays the content from the NAS. I cannot get my AppleTV to show my NAS content. I deleted the Plex app from the AppleTV and re-installed it, but that made things worse (the AppleTV Plex app “lost” my Lifetime Pass)

PROBLEM #1: I am unable to access my Synology NAS content from AppleTV. I’ve checked and re-checked permissions on Synology to make sure Plex Media Server has Read/Write permissions. I can access the NAS content from Plex Web.

PROBLEM #2: After re-installing Plex app on my AppleTV, it no longer sees my Plex Lifetime pass; it is asking me to subscribe to Plex. I see my Lifetime pass on the web when logged into Plex on my MacBook Pro. How can I get the AppleTV Plex app to recognize my Lifetime pass? I think I bought the pass directly from Plex, not via the AppleTV App Store, so Plex is not showing up under my purchases on the AppleTV App Store.

PROBLEM #3. Somehow a new Admin user named “wxrtj” got created on the AppleTV Plex app. I created me as a registered user under that admin account. How do I delete that admin account on the AppleTV and promote me to Admin? That Admin user wxrtj is only showing on my AppleTV, not on Plex accessed from my MacBook Pro. I recall last week the AppleTV created the new Admin user.

On my MacBook Pro under Settings/Plex Home I am shown as the admin user. There are no other registered users showing. Why do I see this user “wxrtj” on my AppleTV?

PROBLEM #4. I cannot find a way to authorize the AppleTV unit from Plex.

Keeping Synology NAS / AppleTV / Plex running harmoniously is such a horrible, time-consuming chore. Things break all the time and it takes me hours and hours to get them running again. It is SO frustrating, especially with zero direct user support from Plex. I just want the system to run reliably and be able to add new content to my stores on the Synology drives. It is easy to move new content to the drives via the Macintosh Finder and the new content shows up in Plex Web right away.

Plex Media Server:

  • Installed: 1.31.2.6810-7000
  • Latest Online Version: 1.29.2.6364-7000

Plex Web

  • 4.100.1

Synology Disk Station Manager

  • DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 4
  1. Check the network.
  • All must be on the same RFC-1918 compliant network.
  • If you’re using the Synology firewall, open all the Plex ports
( Most of us turn it off and let our modem/router protect the home LAN )
  1. Plex Pass is on the account.
  • When you first get into it
    – This gives a link code.
    – Use phone, tablet, or computer to sign into your Plex/Pass account at https://plex.tv/link It will do the rest
  1. Sounds like you’re in the wrong account.
    – Consider uninstalling the app and reinstalling + relinking.
    – Sign into plex.tv on your computer and confirm everything (Settings - upper left corner - Account)

Thanks! It’s working. That worked. The big problem was the Synology firewall was ON. I turned it off, then logged out of Plex on ATV and relinked. That brought my Synology NAS content back. Also, the weird “wxrtj” admin user disappeared. I am the only user now; the little crown indicating Admin next to my name in the Plex web app but not on ATV. I confirmed all settings on the Plex web app.

Thanks so much for your prompt help!
