Cannot login to Plex on Local Machine No Router

Server Version#: 1.41.2.9200-c6bbc1b53
Player Version#: Web Client

I’ve spent a bunch of time trying to figure out if this is possible. From time to time I’d like to watch plex on my laptop (same machine as my plex media server) but I don’t have internet access. Not only don’t I have internet access, but I am not connected to a router at all. I’m just hitting the PMS via the localhost address. I’ve read the articles that explain that you can set the list of ip addresses that Plex allows to login without auth, and i put in 127.0.0.1 in there, but it doesn’t seem to change anything. When I kill the wifi connection as a test, it still wants to redirect to plex.tv for auth. I also played with turning the enableLocalSecurity flag to false and restarting my machine, but nothing changed. I feel like I must be missing something obvious. Are others able to get this to work?

You don’t login to a Plex server.
You login to your plex.tv account.
And then connect your server and all your clients to that plex.tv account.
There is practically no way to run Plex server un-connected.

Practically no way? Or no way? It seems like Plex specifically is advertising certain ways to connect to your server without logging in to plex.tv but I just can’t get them to work.

Where? I’m sure it isn’t.

in their support articles they mention two ways that I specified above, the enablelocalsecurity flag, and the list of ip addresses that are allowed without auth? neither of these are working for me but are explicity discussed in many plex support articles as ways to connect to plex without auth?

This is now pretty much useless. Particularly when setting up a new server.
New servers do also fetch codec licenses from plex.tv and will only do so when linked to a plex account.

Those are only meant to provide access from a few local client in the case of a temporary internet outage. These clients will have all privileges a server admin has. So you might want to use that sparingly.

So, there is no way to operate a Plex server with local authentication, and no internet connection.

I’m a bit confused. You’re saying the list of ip addresses allowed without auth DOES work but should be used sparingly, but also that there is no way to operate a plex server with local auth and no internet connection? How can both of those statements be true?

It will work if the server has been already set upwhile it had an internet connection, and has regular internet access.
Only in the case of a temporary internet outage, the “list of clients…” will become useful.
