Server Version#: 1.22.1.4271-b86a5e175
Player Version#: web player 4.53.0
I have been using the web player for a while (atleast 2 years now) no issue but after the update on 23rd of March I started experiencing problem with the web player. Issue seems to be the player will not play the video. I have 2 servers and same issue on both. If I use a client software it works fine. Both my servers are seeing the same issue and I have tried multiple browsers on multiple devices with same outcome. If the play button is pressed nothing happens. I confirmed this with some other users on reddit and they seem to have been having the same issue. Suggested fix was role back which I didn’t do but waited for the next release.
I updated the server today and see the problem remains. So I decide to post for a possible fix or a new revision.
Edit: after today’s update it looks like the web interface is even worse I cannot access the server settings page.
It’s kind of sad as this is one of the very basic function for a media server to play a media. Software releases should be tested more strictly for the basic functions. I had to install Jellyfin temporarily to have something going for my kids.
The web player doesn’t work if you are accessing the plex server locally https://LOCALIPADDRESS:PORT/web/index.html#!/. It does work if you are accessing the plex server https://app.plex.tv/desktop. Seems kind of stupid to have to stream music/videos/pictures over the internet instead of keeping the traffic on the local network.
That’s not what is happening.
The URL https://app.plex.tv merely loads the web app into the memory of the web browser.
Once it has arrived in there, it works the same as if you load it from your server machine.
This is not a “website”, it is a genuine app.
Same as above. Loading the web app from https://app.plex.tv doesn’t make your server “open to the internet”.
OK so could you explain I was using http://192.168.56.88:32400/web before and was working fine until the server release on 23rd March and now it’s not working. So something is wrong. I have 2 servers both are seeing the exact same issue. No settings have been changed.
I have the server setup so it don’t need any authentication when it’s playing off local network.
I have the exact same issue, I cannot play any video that requires transcoding through the web interface. It doesn’t matter if I access it with the local URI or with the plex.tv URI.
I can see a transcode is in progress on the server, but the playback never start…
It has worked before. I don’t have any problems playing back anything on my Samsung TV with transcoded content.
I had the exact same issue since the March 23 update, and posted about it elsewhere.
My situation: Win10 server, multiple clients running Linux and Win10, accessing Plex via Firefox, Chrome, Brave and Edge (just to test it), all consistently failed to play.
Here’s the really weird thing - going through this particular thread and reading about the app.plex.tv loading thing, I decided to click that link (https://app.plex.tv). Nothing much happened in that new tab, BUT then I went back into the other tab where I had already loaded Plex (and where playback had failed again and again), and tried playing something - and it worked.
I can’t tell yet whether this will work with my other devices, but it seems that if playback fails on your usual “http://ip.ip.ip.ip:32400/web/index.html”, then you can just load up a separate tab with “app.plex.tv”, go back to the IP one, and it’ll work for some reason.
This is really weird, but I hope this helps the Plex folks figure out the bug here. Because it’s really frustrating.
Yes, can confirm it works the same. Doesn’t play my media. Have to use VLC instead of plex web app to play local music tracks off a plex server since update to plex media server referred to at the top of this post.
I’m having similar problems with Windows 10, both the Plex and HTPC clients. I’ve attached some Windows events observed, Windows Error Report files, and a dump from the server console of logs. Plex.zip (5.2 MB)
Attached web debug log with a playback session that doesn’t work (MPEG2 TS 1080i file) and one that works (MKV HEVC 576p)
What’s odd is that I can playback live tv that is exactly the same type of media that doesn’t work when already recorded
So I tried many different types and noticed that when I manually select “automatic conversion” in the playback settings, then playback starts, if I select “Original quality” (that was selected by default) then playback never starts… (it works also when selecting subtitle for playback)
So I guess that the problem is that the video should be transcoded, but is not (in the logs I see that it cannot be direct played, so I don’t know why it doesn’t work)
Having the same issue as you and on the basis of your post, I had a look at Jellyfin, it looks like it might suit my use case, but do you know if it would work … for the following purposes…
installed on lightweight SBC with attached SSD (Armbian - a debian like distro)
stream to web clients on PCs
stream to VLC on Android using DLNA
playback on Kodi client to the TV/system
I don’t use any of the other functions of the plex platform.
