Plex will not play in windows 11 app or in Chrome, or on my streaming box apps eg AppleTV. My computer is a Alienware Aurora R-12 gaming computer tower win 11. My media is stored in WD MyCloud whose UI is where I recently updated Plex. After that my Plex basic windows player told me that secure connections may be disabled. I may need to adjust some settings on my network, it said. It also said to Allow Fallback to Insecure Connections in Web Settings. I do not know what that means. In the left column my library is no longer visible.
What - exactly - is your Media Server installed on? Is it living on the MyCloud device, or is the server on the Alienware computer?
In chats with the OP elsewhere, they seem to think that a “UI” update on the MyCloud messed up the server. Since the server is unreachable, I suspect that the Plex server itself is either not running, or unclaimed. I think this server got unclaimed a few years back, and it was a bit of a fight to get it claimed again.
If the server is on the MyCloud, then the “server-windows” is incorrect.
In the MyCloud UI, Plex Media Server is shown as having been installed 14 June 2026, the day I clicked the update button there. If it believes that was the day it was first installed, that must mean it is as claimed as it would be the moment it was installed. You are correct. Getting claimed was what you helped me with in October 2022..
Okay, well, installed doesn’t mean “claimed”. First, let’s look at the MyCloud UI, and see if there is any indication that the server is even running.
Let’s see what google says. The AI suggests… turning the server off and on again. hilarious as it is, there’s more to it than that. Follow the steps on the official Western Digital site for how to reconnect Plex.
A brief summary:
- Turn the Plex app OFF.
- Reboot the entire NAS
- After it comes back up, turn the app to ON.
I am not aware of a switch for turning the windows app off or on. Does sign-out equal turning off? … I found an on/off switch in MyCloud. Now that it is on, my library in the windows desktop Plex app has returned.
That is it. Plex is an app that runs on your Cloud. In it’s UI, there is a slider switch to turn various apps on or off. In the link I provided, it shows the UI.
I hear that updating the Plex app in your cloud requires Plex to be turned off. It won’t turn itself back on afterwards, so you need to manually go in and flip that switch. Which you did.
So it seems to be working now?
Yes. Great Relief. Thanks for your attention and help.
