Running Mac Sequoia 15.5
I’m trying to add my own media to my library and am stuck in a loop that has me continuously download the Plex media server. Starting with going to the website to download the media server for installation, I download the media server, move it to my applications folder, click on it to run, it starts running and show the Plex media icon in the upper right menu bar of my MacBook. I click on the icon and go to Open Plex.. which takes me to my profile on the website. I want to add my own media so I go to + My Media on the left side menu bar. This taks me to a screen that says “Add Your Media to Plex” with a button that says “Get Plex Media Server”… this is where it loops back to where I started. I already have and am running the Plex Media Server. Clicking on the button takes me to the Downloads page where I am prompted to download the Plex Media Server. There is no way for me to add my own media, all it does is loop me back to this page to continuously download the Media Server. Importing and organizing my own library was the sole reason for me wanting to use Plex. This has been extremely disappointing! Does anyone know what’s going on here?
I tried to go through all of the steps there the best I could but the Add Media button still takes me to download the media server file. I start by clicking on the Plex icon in the Mac menu bar, go to Open Plex.., then sign in online, which according to the instruction here should claim my server on my computer automatically. I’m not running a VPN but I do have AVG anti virus running, not sure if that would matter. I disconnected it but it will eventually reconnect on its own.. thanks for your help here, any ideas? I really want to get this to work because I hear good things about Plex
The version of Plex Media Server I’m using for Mac OS is the version that is currently available for download on the website, v.1.41.8.9834-071366d65 May 27, 2025
Also I’m seeing that if I go to “Check for Updates..” using the Plex icon in the Mac OS menu bar, it takes me to a webpage on the Plex website that says"
Not authorized
You do not have access to this server.
You may be able to claim it by choosing “Open Plex…” from the Plex menu in the macOS menu bar or Windows system tray. For more troubleshooting tips, see our support article.
As per that support article, I opened terminal after finding the com.plexapp.plexmediaserver file under Library/Preferences and entered in all of the commands, all of them went through without errors except for the first one, 'defaults delete com.plexapp.plexmediaserver PlexOnlineHome` which terminal say failed because it could not find the file.. “Domain (com.plexapp.plexmediaserver) not found.
Defaults have not been changed.”
What article did you follow? Sounds like your server might have been previously claimed under a different Plex account so it won’t let you claim it under the account you are now logged into. You need to remove the account information form the plist, which will allow you to claim the server.
If the instructions you are following had you remove the account information, then try restarting your computer, then go to the task bar and click on “open plex” from there.
