Please help. I have been messing with this for days now. Here’s where I’m at…
I’ve been trying to install Plex on my new Synology DS918+ NAS. I have downloaded the Plex installer for Synology NAS (Intel 64 version).
I manually install in DSM. I give the Plex folder and my user folder read/write access. I open Plex and sign in. When loading Plex for the first time, it finds a new server asks me to log in and create a name. It freezes here and will not continue past this screen. If I reload the page it takes me to Plex homepage with an orange bar at top acknowledging an unclaimed server so I hit “claim it now”. When I try to claim the server, it times out and I get a notification that an update is available and “please install manually”. So the cycle begins. I have tried multiple times, each with a fresh install of Plex and the install file downloaded from Plex website.
Other notes…
I’ve changed the trust level on NAS to any publisher
Added Plex’s Public Key to the NAS certificates panel
I do have Plex Media Server installed on the computer I am woking on but it is not running.
The most common reason for failure is because the Synology can’t connect to the internet properly. (PMS needs the internet to be claimed)
The less likely is you started the setup process before the NAS had completed the lowest level initialization. It doesn’t happen often but it does happen.
To remedy this, first check the network
Stop PMS in Package Center
Control Panel - Network - Network Interfaces - Edit whichever one you plugged in.
Below is a screenshot of my Synology configuration. Your configuration will differ but should look similar.
If you change any network settings, restart PMS in package center and attempt to claim again
If not a network configuration issue, then it’s an initialization issue
Control Panel - Shared Folders - Edit the Plex share - Permissions - Give your username R/W permission
In File Station open the Plex share
Right click Library and delete it
When it completes, you can close File Station
Start PMS
Wait 30-45 seconds as it creates all the low level data structures
In a fresh browser window, open http://ip.addr.of.syno:32400/web
Sign in normally (this will claim it for you)
If anything fails, I’ll need to see the logs
Stop Plex
File Station -> Plex -> Library -> Application Support - Plex Media Server
Right click on Logs
Compress to Logs.zip
Please attach that ZIP file and I will find out why PMS isn’t starting.
Thank you, @ChuckPA – Working through this now. Thank you for you patience as I am a novice. How can I check if my own network settings are correct? I do not see your screenshot. I have a “default gateway” address and then “manually configure DNS server”. I have attached the Logs file. Thank you!
Thank you and sorry it has taken so long to respond. Ended up going to sleep last night (much needed) and went to work today. So my default gateway address matches my IPv4 address. My DNS address however does not seem to match anything. It looks generic but my router does not have any DNS configuration options. It is an AT&T fiber router/modem that was just installed. Model BGW210. Did my log files seem fishy at all?
Holy crap, that worked! THANK YOU! Had a feeling I was missing something simple like that. So are their any risks/security vulnerabilities setting it up like this?
Thank you so much! So Plex is now available in network but still not available outside of network. Any thoughts? In the Remote Access tab, my Private address is green but Public address is red.
I have the same issue, I have been trying to follow your steps but no luck here.
Can you please help?
I can’t see the attachment you mentioned previously.
