I’m on OS Monterey with latest Plex install. I would like to occasionally delete Files from the location ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Plex Media Server/Sync/ since my boot drive is only 256GB but can’t find a folder at this location. What do I do wrong?
You shouldn’t have to manually delete videos you downloaded to the Plex for Mac desktop app through the file system. Simply delete them from within Plex.
As for that path not showing… are you failing to see the entire path or just some subfolders of it? I take it you’re using the same (macOS) account that’s also executing your Plex for Mac desktop app?
Edit: given how you tagged this post… just for clarification – this is about deleting downloaded media in the desktop player app, not some server related question?
To add, Tom is correct delete from within Plex. Digging around the Root Directory could cause a lot of pain, if your not careful.
As for the location on your Monterey install you were trying to locate. Access is via the hidden Library in Go menu, top of Desktop. To make correct Library appear, hold down the option key.
Thank you guys for the input. In my understanding plex saves files that are for download in that location so with my small boot drive the idea was to clean that folder up with hazel from time to time to avoid a full boot drive… I assume if I delete the downloaded files from my device withing the app will not delete that “sync”-folder on my mac…
EDIT: Even with option key pressed I can’t access the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Plex/Plex Media Server/Sync/ I only have access to the /Users/sfreek/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server and there is no “sync”-folder…
If you download a video from your server to the Plex desktop app, Plex will store the file on the desktop machine (in the folder you’ve mentioned).
By deleting the download from that app, the Plex for Mac app will also delete the file from that folder (it might take a minute or so but it’ll be gone for good).
There’s absolutely no need to start messing with the file itself. Otherwise you end up with Plex still showing supposedly downloaded files but failing to play them (given they’ve already been deleted).
Do you have the Plex for Mac desktop app installed on your Mac and downloaded media to it?
This isn’t about the Plex Media Server… just saying to avoid confusion.
To clarify: I do not have installed plex app on my Mac server and I don’t want to. Again: If I download a Movie from my server to say my iPhone, I would like to delete the file from server afterwards to avoid filling up the boot drive. That’s why I started this thread… So this is about the plex server, NOT the app!
In that case you got a very wrong path to start with.
To be perfectly honest I’m not sure Plex will play nice if you delete the original of a downloaded file or if that’ll cause some hiccups whenever you start playback of that downloaded file on your iOS device.
In any way… there’s no copy of a downloaded file in that folder. The link you got is purely for downloads to the Plex for Mac desktop app (on the system where that app is installed).
Ok thanks for clarification! So there is no folder of plex server saving files or is it just the wrong folder and if so where is plex server saving files for download on other devices?
