Can't get subtitles to work

Hi all,
Newbie here. my server is on a mac. I have setup subtitles and followed these articles

and cannot for the life of me get subtitles to work properly. I have used opensubtitles that only gives me a handfull of subtitles, and another agent sub-zero that includes open as well as another. I can only get one subtitle to work and it is very minimal, does not give me all the subtitles. can anyone help please?
