Can't install Plex Media Server on my Mac mini

Server Version#: current one
Player Version#: current one

I have a lifetime subscription to Plex Media Server. Sometime in the past year or two the Plex software has been rewritten in versions that require a more modern operating system than my late 2013 Mac Book Pro could run. As a result I have not had the tuner or access to the videos on my external hard drive. After some recent favorable financial events I got together enough money to get a Mac mini with a Dell monitor. Its operating system is up to date.

I followed the instructions to install the Server but it doesn’t work. I run the install, it never asks me about my databases of video files, and it doesn’t allow me to add them.

This is very frustrating. I should be able with my new machine to do everything I used to do with my old laptop but I can’t figure out how to do it using the inadequate instructions you Plex provides. And I haven’t seen my old local channel tuner, either. I do have HDHomeRun that has one.

Does anyone have any idea how to get Plex to work again? Thanks!!!

Did you create the new Mac Mini as a completely new install or from a backup of your old Mini?
How are you accessing the new server (e.g. via browser or Plex client app; from the same machine or a different device; if using a browser: via the new Mac‘s local IP address, e.g. http://127.0.0.1:32400/web or the hosted web app)?

I used a Time Machine backup of the laptop on the new Mac mini. All of my accessing the database and tuner was done either through the apps or the Plex Media Server window in my Safari browser. I have only Apple computing devices–Mac mini, two Apple TVs, iPad Air and iPad Pro. I don’t see the local channel tuner anywhere. I see no way to add my external drive as I used to do. I have no library of private files since I can’t set up the external drive.

Can you access the server by opening http://127.0.0.1:32400/web from Safari on the new Mac Mini?

By restoring your Mac using Time Machine, you should also have transferred the original Plex Media Server. That being said, Time Machine backups are known to mess up the Plex database and therefore causing problems with a restored PMS.

Can’t go anywhere on that link. I believe the part about the messed up database. However, I dragged PMS to the trash bin and reinstalled, all to no effect. Still no database or tuner.

What do you mean by that?

That only deletes/re-installs the app itself – not the restored server data directory.
In order to start over from scratch, you’ll need to delete that directory first.

Thanks for your assistance. I ended up removing all the old stuff and am in the process of bringing my videos into my new computer system. As for the Can’t go anywhere on that link comment, I clicked on it and nothing happened. Nothing really got right until I removed everything and started all over again. I not only replaced my computer but also copied all those videos on my external drive to a new larger drive. Once again, thanks.
