Can't reclaim server after password reset

Server Version#:1.42.2.10156
Player Version#:
I posted to reddit 3 months ago and was told I could not reclaim my server after the password reset debacle unless I was on the same network. I am now seated right next to my server and I still can’t figure out how to reclaim it. What am I doing wrong?

Use case:

  1. QNAP server

  2. Plex installed natively, not in a container

  3. Server is in another State, usually can’t access locally (update: I am next to it right now)

  4. I normally use MyQNAPCloud to access my server.

  5. I am not a computer programmer. Command prompts and github scripts are Greek to me.

Things I have tried:

  1. I tried opening the plex app directly from within the QNAP server, It gives the message “We were unable to complete this request. You will be redirected automatically.” then it takes me to plex.tv to login. No sign of my server there.

  2. I used QfinderPro to find the URL or my server, but when I try to enter it through a browser to login, nothing happens. I tried both http:// and https://

  3. I tried to login using http://localhost:32400/web. This opened plex in my browser, asking me to login. I still don’t see my server, so I can’t reclaim it.

  4. I searched for my preferences.xml file and could not find it using myqnapcloud.

Please help!

What does http://[Local Plex Media Server IP Address]:32400/web show?

When I log in that way I can see the Private and Public URLs for my laptop server which I used briefly before I got my QNAP. No sign of my QNAP server. I assume my QNAP has a different IP address for the PMS installed there.…not sure how to find that address.

What is the IP address of your QNAP, you should be using that.

I used QfinderPro to find my IP for the QNAP.

I typed that into a Chrome browser window with “:32400/web” and also tried the port I am using (:8900/web) at the end and nothing happens. Timeout.

What is the IP address of the NAS? It is OK to post the IP address in the forum. The IP address of my server is 192.168.1.50.

From a system on the same network as the NAS, point a private/incognito browser window at http://nas_ip_address:32400/identity. For example, if the IP address is 10.1.2.3, use http://10.1.2.3:32400/identity.

If Plex Media Server is running, you should see one line of XML information containing claimed="0" (unclaimed) or claimed="1" (claimed).

Plex Media Server uses port 32400 to talk to clients.

Not sure why you are trying 8900, but it will not work to claim the Plex server.

See FordGuys’s comment above, but that means plex is not running on the qnap

I am so confused. In QNAP, it shows PMS is running. From QFinder Pro, the IP address of the QNAP is 76.244.173.39.

In an Icognito window,

I tried http://76.244.173.39:3400/identity and got “This site can’t be reached.”

I tried http://76.244.173.39:8900/identity and got “Page not found or the web server is currently unavailable. Please contact the website administrator for help.”

Since LAN IP addresses are not routed (reachable) over the internet, they are safe to share openly.

What is the LAN IP of your modem / router ? (it’s your Gateway)
It should be a 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x address
If has anything else, other than a 172.16.x.x → 172.31.x.x , tell us

What’s the LAN IP of the QNAP ?

I looked at Plex.tv.

You DELETED the server ?
If so, you’ll need to use a script to reclaim it.

Read the README.md here

It shows how to use it on QNAP (example session)

Let’s use that to try and claim the server.

If it doesn’t work, you’ll have to uninstall PMS (completely erase all the metadata) and start over – which I’d like to avoid.

Thanks for the assist!

Router IP: 192.168.1.254

According to QFinder Pro, it shows the IP of the QNAP is 76.244.173.39. When I open the Network and Virtual Switch utility on the QNAP, it shows this is a WAN IP, which I don’t think I am supposed to use. The only other IP address listed there is “Primary DNS server” 192.168.1.254

I did not delete the server and I definitely do not want to as it is holding a massive amount of content and custom artwork. It is installed and running on the QNAP. On the client, it is no longer under the list of authorized devices.

Not sure if this helps, but late last night I was trying to figure out where the preferences.xml file was located. I created a PlexData shared folder on the QNAP so I could access it. I opened the file in the text editor and found the following:

PlexOnlineToken=“”
PLexOnlineUsername - has entry
PlexOnlinemail - has entry
PlexOnlineHome = “0”

Do I have to run the UserCredentialReset on the QNAP? I don’t know how to open a terminal there. I downloaded the tar file to my laptop but I am not sure where in the QNAP directory it goes. I do not see a /share/Public directory when I open File Station on the QNAP.

How do you have things connected ?

ISP → (WAN port) - Modem/Router - (LAN Ports) → QNAP & Computers

?

Optical Network Terminal>Router (plugged into the ONT port)

QNAP is connected to the Router with an ethernet cable.

Laptop I am typing this on is also connected to an ethernet port on the router.

Is the QNAP plugged into the same group of LAN ports on the router as your Laptop ?

I’m trying to confirm how the QNAP got a public IP.

You’re not using a VPN on the QNAP , are you?

Yes, the QNAP and router are plugged into adjacent ethernet ports.I am not using a VPN.

EDIT: I spoke too soon. It looks like I am using a built in VPN called QVPN Service. I do not understand how this works, but it looks like it’s enabled.

https://www.qnap.com/en-us/software/qvpn-service

When I open QVPN Service, I see the attached.

Yes, you ARE using a VPN. You’re using the QVPN app provided by QNAP.
This is putting your NAS directly on the Internet.

The only security you have is that of the NAS and strength of your passwords.
Personally, I would not trust any NAS vendor with my LAN security.

Someone could get into your NAS -

  1. Take/delete your media
  2. Load other programs on the NAS and do what they want
  3. Attack laptops and computers on your LAN

Not a comfortable thought for most of us.

Circling back on this as I have tried many other solutions from countless threads and websites and literally nothing is working. I will definitely investigate making my NAS safer. I followed the step-by-step instructions for setting up my QNAP and PMS from NASCompares on Youtube. Much of what is posted in the forums is Greek to me but I am trying my best to understand it. I am not an IT guy.

Every solution I have come across has not worked for me. My server does not appear at all (i.e. even with the yellow triangle w/ exclamation point) when I login to plex.tv although a friend’s server which is shared with me is still working fine. Am I missing something simple here? All my files are intact on the server. I am really close to giving up but I have $$$ invested in this and it’s driving me bananas.

Tim,

When you go into the QNAP,
Opening Network & Virtual Switch

Do you see something like this?

What’s important here are:

  1. The local LAN IP (the address of the adapter) should match your LAN subnet (192.168.x.x, or 10.x.x.x ). It should be the IP you use to access it.
  2. Your WAN address should be aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd ( IPv4 )

If you don’t have that, please let me know what’s different.
