Can't reinstall Plex Media Server on Synology DS220+ (DSM 7.0)

Hi all - I just recently replaced the drive in my DS 220+. I don’t want to get into all of the specifics, but basically I replaced my prior Storage Pool with a new one, and I copied over all of my media to the new drive.

Unfortunately, I didn’t copy over Plex Media Server and its settings. I’m upset that I didn’t think about this.

Anyways, I tried installing Plex Media Server manually (using the package called “Plex Media Server for Synology (DSM 7)” from Plex’s website, because I read somewhere not to install the app through the DSM Package Center).

Sadly, nothing is working, and I’ve tried doing this like 50 times. I made sure to give “PlexMediaServer” Read/Write permissions for each of the shared folders that have my media content in it. But after I click the Plex Media Server package in my DSM, I just keep getting this error message “Not authorized. You do not have access to this server.”

What is going on here? I remember installing Plex the first time was so easy. But I’m stuck and I’ve been spinning my wheels for like 12 hours. Please help!

There’s a problem with doing that in DSM 7 for initial setup. You have to point your browser directly at the Synology’s IP address.

  • IP address listed in DSM Control Panel → Info Center → Network
  • http, not https, for initial claiming and setup
  • use a incognito/private browser window to bypass ad blockers, cookie cutters, etc.
  • must be on same network as Synology (not remote)
  • do not use quickconnect, ddns, etc (don’t click the button in DSM).

http://syno_ip_address:32400/web ← put in the real IP address of your Synology.

That was it! Wow, such a simple solution. Thank you!
