Can't replace an old movie

I had a bad copy of a movie on my Plex server. I got a new copy, so I deleted the old copy. Then I uploaded the new copy to my server. So far, so good. The movie is in fact in the Plex folder on my server right where it should be. I can even download it from that location and play the downloaded copy. However, Plex steadfastly refuses to recognize that the movie is there. It is part of a collection and it shows in the Information list of the collection, but I don’t see the movie itself. I have tried the Plex Dance (as best I can - I don’t see anything about bundles under More) and that hasn’t helped. I have scanned Library files several times. I have refreshed the Metadata. I have had Plex Analyze the files. So far, nothing has worked. So what can I do to get Plex to recognize that the movie is there?

Preferably you add the new version before deleting the old one – this way, Plex will keep all manual changes and your watch history for this item.

The Clean Bundles option is in Settings > [Server Name] > Manage > Troubleshooting.

Is there a chance the new file could have been mismatched as a different movie?
You should see those if you filter your library for Duplicates to see if it’s been added to another movie in your library. Alternatively it can be helpful to sort the library by Date Added in case it got mismatched as something “new” – in your particular case… can you open the movie item from within the collection and check out at what file it’s pointing (-> :pencil2: > Info or > Get Info)

I appreciate your suggestions. I tried everything you suggested, but no joy. The only duplicates are the ones I know about. When I searched by date added, the last file it shows was 2 days ago. That was correct for that one, but it is still not showing anything added here - even though my NAS shows the file in the folder with the others in its collection and it shows it was uploaded (again) today at 5:45 pm CST. When I click on Info for the collection, it does list all 5 movies in this collection - including the one that is missing in action, and it shows that it is in the proper location. However, I still can’t get it to show up in the movie list so that I can actually play it. Other ideas?

If the file path is listed in the collection info, that means it’s still available in Plex.
If all the other movies of the collection are showing but not the replaced file, the new file seems to have been added as a duplicate to one of the other movies in that collection.

Can you check the info on the individual movies inside the collection?

I did as you asked. It is not added as an attachment to any of the other movies. Each of the others has its own (proper) title. The only place Plex seems to know about it is in the list of files (Info) of the collection.
I know (now) that I should have added the new before deleting the old. I won’t make this mistake again. But at this point, is there anything I can do to force Plex to accept the new version of the movie?

I don’t doubt the other movies have the correct title… the question was only aiming if there’s more than 1 file linked to any of the items – this would e.g. show on the item’s Info tab.

You might want to check if your database is having some more substantial problems

Fortunately, I didn’t have to restore the database. I did use the File Station on my Synology NAS to rename the file. Then I scanned the library again and Voila! the movie I wanted was there. I guess because there was enough of the original name, Plex was able to associate it with the old file - but because the name was somewhat different, it “found” it as new. I’m just glad this worked and I very much appreciate all your help. You have taught me a lot about Plex.
