Can't set Account UserName

Hi …

I think there’s a relationship between server, Username and password that I don’t understand.

When I first set up my Plex server (Ubuntu 18, Plex 1.13.5.5332, e-mail address bdemchak@gmail.com linked through Google), I was able to set bdemchak as my userID and give a password in the Account panel. I supplied the same userID to rclone/rcache, and after a bit of futzing, was able to operate rcache without any “bad status” messages.

Result: Happy Plex, Happy gcache.

But then I had to rebuild Ubuntu and install a new Plex server. After that, when I try to set the Username in the Account panel, I get an error “Username has already been taken”. I also now get “bad status” messages from rcache.

I’m guessing that not setting a userID is related to the “bad status” message.

Have I somehow accidentally created a second Plex server, and it can’t access my original Username??

What could the bdemchak Username be attached to, if not my Plex server?

I think I’m a little confused. Can someone shed light on this??

The server is still there as yours according to Plex.tv records.
This being the case, and having to install again, means only that a new “Server ID” was created.

You still can “claim it”. It just takes a little bit.

I presume you will be typing on the keyboard for the server (your computer?).

  1. Stop PMS
  2. From the command line: sudo rm -f "/var/lib/plexmediaserver/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml"
  3. Start PMS
  4. Open an In-Cognito / Private browser window
  5. In a tab, open http://127.0.0.1:32400/web
  6. You will be greeted by the sign-in and “Got It” pages immediately followed by the setup wizard
  7. This is where you sign into your Plex account.
  8. If it will not authenticate, Check the network configuration. PMS must be connected to the internet for initial authentication.
  9. Once this begins, follow it through as if you were performing any normal setup.
  10. If, since the reload of Ubuntu, you’ve not defined any library sections, do so now and continue normally.
  11. Else, Skip defining new library sections. The existing sections, if any, will be waiting for you when you “Finish” and arrive at the Dashboard.
  12. Once at the Dashboard: Settings - Server - (review each tab as all prior settings have been reset to default).

I followed the instructions, and was pleased to see that when I browsed to the Plex server web page (via an incognito tab), my local page reported that it had found an existing Plex server.

However, when I attempted to use the user name bdemchak, I got the same error. I’m guessing my local server bound to the second server definition, even though you had intended that I bind to the original server definition??

I tried entering a new user name (bdemchak1) in my Account page … the new name was accepted. I also changed gcache config to have the new user name. The result was no further error messages from gcache.

Now, should I have done this?? What did I mess up by choosing a new user name?

Can I just stick with this configuration and move on??

If you have it in a configuration that works, just go with it.
