Can't uninstall Plex package

You do not have to update DSM. You have options.

Option 1: Update the NAS to DSM 7.2.2. You can then use Package Center like normal to install/update/etc. Plex Media Server.

Option 2: Remain on DSM 7.1.1 Update 7 and wait on the tools Chuck is creating. See his post three above your last post. It will be much easier than using the command line,

Option 3: Remain on DSM 7.1.1 Update 7 and use a combination of Package Center and the command line.

Use Package Center to install Plex Media Server. This includes installing PMS updates on top of the current version (like normal).

Use synopkg to start, stop, and uninstall Plex Media Server.

In addition to start and stop, synopkg has an uninstall option. Enter the synopkg command without any options to see the entire list ($ synopkg).

I ran a quick test on my DS414 running DSM 7.1.1 Update 7 (quick = I ran it twice and nothing broke).

I uninstalled PMS using synopkg. It removed Plex Media Server. It did not remove anything from the PlexMediaServer shared folder.

I then installed 1.41.2.9200 using Package Center. PMS installed and ran as expected.

I then installed 1.41.3.9276 (current beta) on top of 1.41.2.9200 using Package Center. PMS installed and ran as expected.

So… if you wish to remain on DSM 7.1.1 Update 7, you can still run Plex Media Server. Use Synology Package Center to install Plex. Use the synopkg command to start and stop. If you need to uninstall Plex, you can use the synopkg command to do so.

Note: If you use synopkg to uninstall Plex, I suggest you make a backup of the PlexMediaServer shared folder first. You can use Hyper Backup. As mentioned, I performed the uninstall twice, but that is a very small sample size. Having a backup is a good practice anyway.

Thanks. I’ll probably do Option 2 since it sounds easier. I do have a ‘Plex’ folder with my metadata before the upgrade and a new ‘PlexMediaServer’ folder with new metadata when my libraries had to be remapped. I’m leaving them alone.

Will all the options you outlined help resolve the issue of getting my metadata back? Do I need to delete any folders? Is it as simple as uninstalling and reinstalling? Which PMS version should I be using if on DSM 7.1.1? Will this resolve the issue with Package Center not showing Plex correctly?

Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate your help and guidance. Thank you to Chuck as well for taking the time to develop a solution.

Don’t delete any folders. Straightforward, but not an uninstall / reinstall. Will follow up later Saturday.

Do the database files still exist in /Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Databases?

If so, then your original Plex server is still there.

It can still be restored, but doing so will wipe out the current server that is using /PlexMediaServer.

To restore your original server, you would follow the steps in the reddit article linked in your first post.

However, the current problems with DSM 7.1.1 Update 7 mean you’ll have to do some things with the Linux command line that are normally performed with Package Center. Specifically, the items in Step 5 to uninstall Plex Media Server and delete files from /PlexMediaServer.

Let me know how you would like to proceed.

May I be of assistance here?

Yes I still see the database files in the Plex folder. I see many files in the database folder. I don’t care for the current server using the PlexMediaServer folder. I’d like to have my Plex how it was before I did the upgrade.

If you can provide any guidance for the command line to uninstall Plex Media Server and delete the files, I would be grateful to do so. Thanks again.

I want to try what FordGuy61 is outlining to restore my metadata and server before the upgrade but if you have any other ideas, please let me know. Thank you!

@lawzenge

Whatever you want to try is fine.

As long as you don’t delete any of Plex’s files (in PlexMediaServer or Plex share) then it can always be recovered / fixed.

Since yesterday, I’ve been trying to find out why my package fails to operate correctly with DSM 7.1.1 U7.

In my testing, I took a fresh DSM 7 installation
Installed PMS,
verified everything was OK

The moment I updated DSM to update 7, it broke the package.

There is, so far, nothing I can find which explains this.

Furthermore, PMS continues to operate correctly.
Only the Package Manager interface to Plex is broken.

This having been verified , I can give you any commands, to run in the SSH (shell) or Task Scheduler envirornment, to manage PMS while we figure this out.
. This includes installing, upgrading, claiming, and uninstalling.

This change from the Plex shared folder → PlexMediaServer was required as we moved to to DSM 7 support.

The change of username from plex → PlexMediaServer was also required.

We did not have a choice in this. These changes where Synology-mandated.

As for the process of Migrating a DSM 6-based PMS installation to DSM 7,
there are two basic steps to perform.

The installer does all the rest of the work for you.

Would uninstalling and doing a reinstall correct the metadata issue and fix package center without needing to upgrade DSM? Thank you.

Currently, I do not have a fix for the DSM 7.1.1 Update 7 problem because I’ve not figured out where the problem is.

I was alerted to it Friday when folks installed Update 7 and reported the breakage of their running PMS systems.

In all I’ve done so far, it looks like 7.1.1 Update 7 has broken Package Center in a very unusual way.

I will continue to work on this tomorrow (Sunday) and get back in touch with Synology on Monday to try and figure it out.

If they can help me solve it , or even with a work around, I’ll get it done ASAP (Monday if possible)

I can help you upgrade from DSM 6 → DSM 7 but, IMHO, I would stay on DSM 6 for now.

What do you want to do?

I am on DSM 7 and don’t think I can downgrade back to DSM 6? I’d like to stay on DSM 7 anyways but would like to try to uninstall and reinstall Plex Media Server so I can get my metadata back. I can’t do that since my package center isn’t displaying Plex correctly. I understand I can uninstall via the command line but don’t know what to enter. Thank you.

$ sudo synopkg uninstall PlexMediaServer

If you enter $ sudo synopkg you will see all the options (start, stop, etc.). You won’t need most of them, but that is the way to display the info.

You will still use Synology Package Center to install Plex Media Server. That part still works OK.

Hold off on things for now.

I traded messages with @ChuckPa. DSM 7.1.1 Update 7 broke more things than just Package Center. The migration steps as outlined in the reddit thread will not work. Chuck is working to figure out where things are broke and how to fix.

ALL:

I am in contact with Synology Support (TW).

They have confirmed the problem.

I’ve been told they are working on and will be releasing DSM 7.1.1 Update 8

No date was given but given how quickly they replied, I will presume it’s going to be quick.

ALL:

Between the efforts of the SynoCommunity folks and everyone here,
Synology has identified the missing function from the DSM 7.1.1 U7 release.
(function: SYNO.SDS.htmlEncode)

Given the speed of Synology’s replies, I am very much expecting short turnaround to remedy

Hey ChuckPA, still no update from Syno?

We know there will now be a DSM 7.1.1 Update 8

Hope they release quickly but “quickly” is not a word I normally associate with them

No date was given but this is a VERY simple fix

It’s been a month, and no DSM update yet to fix this. Just wondering if Plex Team Members have heard anything from Synology? Thanks!

Synology said by the end of February.
