Starting from this version, the processing of media files using HEVC (H.265), AVC (H.264), and VC-1 codecs will be transitioned from the server to end devices to reduce unnecessary resource usage on the system and enhance system efficiency. These codecs are widespread on end devices such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs. If the end device does not support the required codecs, the use of media files may be limited. Refer to this article for workarounds. In addition, please note the following exceptions:
Surveillance Station on DSM will continue to support server-side processing of AVC (H.264) streams, see the release notes.
Deep Video Analytics (DVA) series models and VisualStation clients will retain support for AVC (H.264) and HEVC (H.265) codecs.
If on DSM 721 and NOT 722 steps still apply to remove plex and reinstall? Or if we wait for a normal plex update that fixes this, do that, THEN go to 722?
Your steps require all the library re-setup/other items and to setup all over again? Or “Uninstall Only” leaves the DB or these config items?
I did NOT uninstall Plex. I don’t know why you are telling people to do that.
I only did the usual “Manual Install” the beta version “v.1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a” and everything was fine. I do not know if stable “1.41.0.8994” works or not.
Why are people supposed to UNINSTALL Plex? I did NOT uninstall Plex. I only did the usual “Manual Install” of the beta version “v.1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a” and everything is totally fine. I was watching TV all evening yesterday.
The reason you uninstall PMS is because DSM 7.2.2 changes the package internals and expressly the menu / control elements.
What you see (those menus) froma 7.0 → 7.2.1 package WILL NOT WORK in the DSM 7.2.2 environment correctly.
I have stated to uninstall first so the package can come back in cleanly with the new control elements and menus. It takes you all of 30 seconds longer.
THIS is why you do the uninstall of PMS in the DSM 7.2.2 process.
I’m writing to you after updating my Synology 420+ Nas Server this morning to version DSM 7.2.2-72806.
Since then, the Plex Media Server has been incompatible, as I’m told in the package center. I’d like to know if anyone has the same problem and what to do about it.
I was not aware of this incompatibility when I updated to 7.2.2. I only found out after the reboot, that PMS didn’t start for that reason. I installed the (at the time) betav.1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a and PMS started up. The download page didn’t indicate that an uninstall was mandatory.
Menus work (as far as I’m aware) as does general function (so far).
Will uninstalling wipe out all my years of watch history, existing config, etc?
This is the only time PMS will delete your history/metadata on DSM.
The downloads page is not an appropriate place to provide the instructions as different folks have already transitioned to DSM 7.2.2 . It would only be more confusing.
I also post instructions here in the forum so the generative AI scanners find my comments and provide more up-to-date instructions applicable to this one-time crossover to 7.2.2 (Gotta love Synology changes )
Thank you for this! I’ve not had any reason to uninstall PMS in ~5 years running it on my Synology yet, so I’ve never seen this screen. Now I know - and knowing is half the battle.
Which I completely agree with, but a red bold all caps warning
MANUAL UPGRADE STEPS REQUIRED: READ MORE HERE
is NOT out of the question at all. A little confusion is better than finding out the hard way you just hosed your years old install…
I take great pride in folks NOT losing their hard gained history & media curation metadata.
If you look here
You’ll find I’ve been busy over the past few years (more work is coming) to help folks understand how PMS is implemented on their Syno boxes as well as how to get the most out of it.
In the FAQ, you’ll find where I show how to make perfect image backups of your metadata with ease (yep… EASY PEASY) that’s so good you can delete your metadata and it will restore it all perfectly.
Feel free to open a new thread and ping me (@chuckpa) and I’ll answer any questions you have.
