Can't use my (local) music library any more

Server Version#: 4.87.2 ??? I get to a page “Plex Web - General” - is this the server or the player? Why doesn’t it say which? So unhelpful it’s like it’s intended.
Player Version#: 4.87.2 ???

The installation .exe is PlexMediaServer-1.29.2.6364-6d72b0cf6-x86_64.exe (downloaded today, 2022-11-08). I have already uninstalled and reinstalled PMS in an attempt to resolve things.

So I’ve been happily using Plex Media Server for about a year… I use it for ONE PURPOSE AND ONE PURPOSE only: to stream MP3 files to my stereo system over Wifi. The MP3 files are kept on a hard drive. The computer managing this is a desktop, OS W10.

Last week I noticed that PMS was no longer showing as a Wifi source. With a sense of anticipated stress (everything to do with configuring or changing PMS in any way always involves stress, not least because the versions appear to have changed so radically over the years, rendering most help found by Googling completely baffling) I tried to find out what the problem is.

The interface appears to have changed when I look at the PMS “management” page or whatever you call it. I can currently find absolutely NO TRACE whatsoever of what my copious notes previously described: on the main page I’m meant to be able to find a button or link which says “Manage” … and then “Add library → Music”.

There is currently no sign at all of any “Manage” button or link.

Please don’t tell me that Plex is “too complicated” a solution for my simple requirement: I like the simple way it organises things on my receiving TV, so you can choose by “artist”, by “album” etc. I just happen to have no interest in audiovisual or in streaming using Plex in any way whatsoever.

Please can someone just explain in simple instructions how with the latest Plex version I re-establish a (local) music library using MP3 files and then stream these through my Wifi. Thanks.

THANKS!

In the mean time I had found that! And I did indeed “dare to touch the Windows registry”. I am very comfortable with doing this.

I found that when I had deleted that key after removing PMS from my machine… and then re-installed… things were more sane and less infuriating:

  • I found the MANAGE heading on the page and the “Library” link under it
  • I added and scanned my library
  • I checked “Enable DLNA” server

Voilà: “Plex Media Server” shows on my TV! Phew.
