This sounds like the problem I was having, as discussed in this thread:
Unfortunately, it seems that refreshing your metadata for your entire movies library is the only solution for getting all the actors/movies into one grouping again - just be prepared for a lot of your movie posters and a few other things to get screwed up in the process.
