Chromecast no longer streaming

Server Version#: 1.41
Client Version: 2025.15.0
Platform Version: 14

Folks,

I have Plex server running on an RPi4 and Android as the “remote control” to cast to a Chromecast plugged into an HDMI port (and these days also to Chromecast built into the TV). All streaming is done from files on my local RPi not from the Internet.

The other day I got a notification on my Android app that I needed to update the server, so I installed 1.41 using the requisite Deb file and now the Android app is happy about the server version.

However, although I can stream to my Android, it will no longer cast to the Chromecast. It comes up with the big plex logo on the TV screen, but resolutely refuses to play any files.

Anyone able to help me debug this please? Am happy to give any relevant information that would enable us to track down the issue.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. From what I can tell this is a similar issue, but they’re talking about pihole being the problem and I don’t run pihole.

Any DNS resolver which is applying some sort of black list, and thus filtering the domain names it does (or doesn’t) resolve is affected.
Your router also has a DNS resolver in it.

Here are the logs in case it helps.

AFAIK I have no sort of blockers running anywhere on my network or on my pi and I’ve certainly not set anything up like that manually. I’ll have a scout round my router to see if I can see anything there.

I’ve had a good look round my router and I can see no reason why anything would be getting blocked. Is there anything else that this could be? Do the logs I attached help at all?

It might also be worth mentioning that I can see the Chromecasts on the Adroid app, the Plex logo appears on the TV via the Chromecast just fine once the appropriate Chromcast is selected on the Android app, and the Android app allows me to select what to stream, it’s just that nothing happens once you hit play. It does play on the phone itself, it’s only on the Chromecast it doesn’t stream.

I have the same problem… originally Plex couldn’t see cast devices until I whitelisted the config.claspws.tv domainvon my pihole.

Now, when I cast I see the Plex logo come up and the app displays the show as 0:00 into a 0:00 show and never updated. Eventually the cast times out.

All other apps (except Paramount+) can cast to this device. However both Plex and Paramount plus work on other cast devices in my home.

In my case, this tv is a Vizio M65.

I’ve turned the pihole off, but it made no difference.

I’ve ended up by installing the Plex App on one of my TVs, didn’t realise such a thing existed, and it works a treat . Much nicer interface and more reliable.

So it’s not the server that’s at fault, clearly. My other TV can’t stream as it needs the Chromecast.

And, I must say once again, there’s never been an issue seeing devices since the server and Android app update. Am not convinced I have the same issue.

Same issue for me since the app update.

Also the same issue.

I keep spamming the forums here hoping this eventually gets looked at, but maybe it just wont be fixed?

if you roll back to the older version of the app it should work.

I have the same issue and have been unable to resolve. Have been doing searches hoping someone somewhere has an answer.

This is NOT a DNS problem.
Something broke horribly in both the iOS and Android apps since the last major update.
Especially when it comes to Chromecast.

I will queue up an episode of whatever and while casting it will first be slow as can be, then go through 10-20 episodes without ever running a single episode when casting from my phone.

On iPad it’ll go to the end of an episode and either replay the same episode again, or flash the Plex logo at the end and then skip an episode.

Direct play from client works just fine.
Playing from browser works just fine.
It’s just casting or playing on Android and iOS.
And it’s become sooooooo slow.

like 20-30 seconds for it to actually playing an episode being cast.
And don’t even try to resume something.
It’s watch it all or don’t watch it at all.

And no. it’s not DNS.

I’ve also noticed this issue in the past couple of weeks. I’ve got two Chromecasts, neither of them will now allow Plex to connect from the Android app. When attempting to connect via the Android app, I get a spinning wheel saying that it’s connecting, but it will eventually fail and go back to the profile select screen. I’ve tested and I’m able to connect to both of them using Plex in the Chrome browser, so it’s not an issue on the server side. This is pointing to it being on the Android app side (last updated 5/26/25)

I’m having the same or a similar issue here. I can stream content to other devices fine. (Android phone, PC and even Chromecast+Google TV) Just not the Chromecast ultra. It seems maybe codec dependant, some stuff will stream, but a lot of my content will start loading and immediately revert to the Plex logo without any error message.

Similar’ish problems here, streaming to chromcast from a mac - was fine last week but neither of my chromecasts appear at all now. Hope its cured soon

Same problem here..

Same issue here. Plex using Chromecast sees no devices on the network. Every other app I have with Castings like 4OD, Disney and Youtube work fine so its clearly something on the app itself.

I am affected as well.
I can select my chrome cast, the Plex logo appears on the tv, but thats it. It’s stuck. It was working before. An update must have broken it.

Edit:
I have to correct myself. I just tested it again. The movie playback works again. But there is no preview, like ratings, description, pictures, cast etc.
Just start playback in app even though there is only the plex logo on the tv. At least you can just whatch it again. Better than nothing.
