I purchased a clearstream tv yesterday and finally got it updated for plex. The iOS app reports that the device firmware is 1.1.0.414r1-V1. it was added to plex without issue and plex was able to find channels.
My plex version is 1.17.0.1709 and am using the plexmediaserver-plexpass package on FreeNas 11.2. I updated to the latest with PMS_Updater. Until I updated to 1.17, I noticed that when attempting to stream from plex, the tuner endpoint http://xx.xx.xx.xx:58888/plexbase/devices/geniatechacdbda47-77b7-0000-0000-000000000000 was not updating the tuner status. When using the clearstream tv app I noticed this would be updated with the tuned channel.
After upgrade to 1.17.0.1709, this page now reflects the tuned channel. When “playing”, the activity flyout says “Recording: Live TV - Session” but nothing ever plays.
i finally found that build freebsd build off the plex domain and still no luck. are you using a clearstream tv? would you be willing to send along some of your logs? Seems like the same behavior.
I was able to make sense of this and am posting the following in the hopes that this helps someone else.
I updated FreeNAS to 11.2 and consequently setup a new jail. The main reason for the upgrade was for the newer plex versions to support this tuner (clearstream tv). As such, I didn’t bother adding in any media folders in case i needed to start from scratch (mistake #1)
when playing a live tv stream, the activity view didn’t seem to update with anything meaningful. I tried recording but Plex told me I needed a library for that, so I added a small library of older low res videos (mistake #2).
assuming i had a transcoding issue, I realized the local user didn’t have write to the media directory. After resolving that, I did get incation in the dashboard that something is playing but still no video.
I added another media folder of higher res videos and selected to transcode them to 720 2Mbps. This had the same issue as the Live TV (no playing). Also, the metadata downloader didn’t pull anything in.
After some research I came across this post (https://www.ixsystems.com/community/threads/iocage-plex-metadata-and-transcoding-issue.60628/) which indicated a network issue (pasted the commands below). What is weird is that I was able to wget a file from plex.tv, but did confirm i couldn’t hit anything else. After following the post I was able to transcode movies, confirm metadata downloads, and play Live Tv.
I am not sure why Plex needs it’s own MAC for transcoding, but can confirm the below resolved this issue.
