My Plex-Client on my Nvidia Shield stopped connecting to my server two days ago. I did not update my server nor my client at the time, it just stopped working out of the blue.
My PMS is installed on a server with openmediavault. I decided to upgrade it and now I’m using the most recent version for server and client.
I can watch anything correctly, if I open Plex via browser on other devices, or if I use Serenity for android on my Shield.
I tried to delete the data in my plex-app and I reinstalled the app, too. Didn’t work.
My app only shows an exclamation mark next to the name of my server.
The app-log on my shield tells me, plex can see my server, and resolves it correctly.

The same problem has happened to me too - was working fine, no upgrades to the server.
Everything works until trying to play a video from the Plex client on the Shield. Issue happens on the two Shields I have. Playback from the web client (and I’m currently working around this by casting from the web client on a laptop to the TV).
This issue started happening to me about two days ago, too.
Server version is 1.21.1.3876
Client version is 8.21.2.27212
I even tried linking my server to my plex-account. After logging in into the client, I can see all my media but as soon as I try to play something, Plex gives me an error message, that it can’t reach my plex server.
Your server was not previously claimed by your account? What is the Allow Insecure Connections is set to on the Android TV player? Was it signed in with your account?
I’ve tested a little bit more. To do that, I connected my Server to my account in the web app. After that I linked my account (the same account I’m using here and to connect to my server) to the Shield client and could see my content. “Allow insecure connections” was set on “Never”.
In this state my client couldn’t claim my server, it timed out. I had to set “Allow insecure connections” to “Always”. After that claiming was possible and I could switch to “Never” again. I was able to play my content after that.
It doesn’t work at all if I don’t connect my server to my account, regardless of the setting of “Allow insecure connections”. I don’t need or want a link to my online account, because I use my plex server in my local network only. For all intents and purposes this app is broken for me right now.
never means that it only allows a secure connection secure connections can only happen if you sign in/claim your server to get TLS certificate. If you don’t plan on ever signing in then leave it on never or “on the local network”.
You can also in server set the local ip of Shield in the “networks allowed without auth” Network setting of server
I can only think that it worked for a bit when you set it to never because the cert UUID was cached.
Thanks for pointing out that option. I found it after activating advanced settings. I added my whole subnet and additionally the IP of my Shield. On the client I set the option for unsecure connections to “on the local network”.
Sadly, still doesn’t work.
The thing I don’t get is: I’m using this server with plex for 4 years now. I upgraded from wheezy to jessie and now to buster. And the connection error began suddenly before the last upgrade without me changing anything. I never used the option to whitelist my own network you pointed out.
