I haven’t used Plex collections before, instead opting to use playlists. I figured playlists gave me more options in terms of sorting, which was my preferred feature. However, after watching Lon.TV’s recent video on Plex collections, I saw just how powerful collections can be.
First off, while I knew that my playlists weren’t visible to others users on my server, I did not know that they can see any collections I make. For me, this was a game changer. I also didn’t know that I could make dynamic collections, using specific metadata matching rules for population.
With that in mind, I set about making some collections, along with custom posters. I gave them all a prefix of “0-” in the sort field, ensuring that they show up first when coming into a library. Then, I let my users know about the new additions; feedback has been great. They love my collections, the presentation, and have even requested new collections.
The only thing I couldn’t replicate from Lon.TV’s video was the manipulation of the sort order. No matter if I used static or dynamic collections, I still cannot drag and drop individual movies to alter their sort order.
Here’s a quick screengrab of my movie collections; I still have to make a poster for “Family Movies”, but I just made that one last night. Thanks again, Plex team!
