Comcast blocking plex?

Hello,

I am trying to set up my in-laws computers to stream media from my server running Plex. When I "launch" from any web browser (tried IE, Mozilla, and chrome) from their network it shows :Queue" but does not load any of the menu items on the left and does not load anything but the word "QUEUE" in the main window where my shows, movies and Channels are normally displayed (see below)

I disconnected their computer from their network and connected to the internet through my phones mobile hotspot feature and everything worked normally, I brought their computer over to my house and it worked fine and it worked from a friends house as well.

I have successfully launched and used the web app from several different computers on 3 different networks with no issues.

I have also brought other laptops that I know run the web app to the in-laws house and they have the same isue when trying to connect through the in-laws ISP.

The only thing that is different at the in-laws house is that they use comcast as an ISP. Is comcast blocking access to plex? Is there a way around this.

Not sure how regionally things may be different. But I just recently moved across town, but I did have comcast and I was running Plex fine and they weren't blocking.

What exactly isn't working? myPlex?

Id  suggest you clarify what URL you mean what web access. the IP:32400/manage doesn't work?

Otherwise you may have firewall issue?

What version of OS, plex are you running...etc.

I have Comcast and it works fine here. I share with a lot of people and I've never heard a single issue or complaint with them about not being able to access my server remotely.

Thank you for the replies,

I am using Plex media server version 09.08.18.290-amd64 on FreeNAS.

I am using the http://plex.tv/web/app URL.

Vulcanjedi, now that you mention it, it may possibly be the routers firewall, I will have to take a look at it this weekend.

I had comcast for years, they never replaced my modem, many people now, not sure w/ Comcast, are getting Modem/Routers.  If you have that, be sure you're not double NATing. or else you'll need to accomodate accordingly.

Internally if you cant hit IP:32400/manage, something else is wrong, firewall or something.

Especially locally on the node itself.

I have Comcast in Utah, SLC suburb.  I am convinced they are blocking inbound TCP 32400 to my IP.  I have many ports forwarded to my main PC for various services, and TCP 32400 is the only one that doesn’t work.  Luckily the router I’m using supports forwarding ports to different ports, so I have TCP 65432 forwarding to TCP 32400 on my PC, and use the “Manually specify port” feature in the advanced settings of Plex.  I would prefer to change the listener port of the Plex server itself, but it appears this is not possible.

I would prefer to change the listener port of the Plex server itself, but it appears this is not possible.

This is correct, you cannot change the port that plex uses on the computer itself. It is always 32400 on the inside :)

Hi all,

Not sure if I can add anything here, but I just had Comcast install their Xfinity service yesterday and sure enough my Plex Media Server is no longer reachable from the outside.  I didn't have to open any ports on my router with my previous ISP (Verizon Fios), and everything seemed to work out of the box.  I looked at this router's firewall settings and it appears to be open, so no reason for this not to work.  The only thing I can think of is that I have a multi-room DVR and the tech installed a coaxial "filter" on the outside of the house.  He said this was so that the neighborhood cable boxes don't try to connect with my DVR to play movies from it.  Apparently without the filter all cable boxes in the neighborhood can be on the same network?  It should be simple enough for me to disconnect and try with and without the filter, but I just wanted to hear if everyone that has problems, also has a multi-room DVR as part of their service, thus has the filter as well.

I solved my problem and it had nothing to do with the coaxial filter.  I went into the Router and enabled Zero Config which is found under Advanced > Device Discovery.  You also have to make sure UPnP is enabled (mine was already on by default).  After that, I went to Plex on my NAS and in the Settings > Server > Connection page, I clicked the retry button to establish the connection and it worked.  That was the issue with mine.  Hope this helps!

So TCP 32400 is working now...I recently changed my router to one that supports UPnP, and the Plex server successfully maps a dynamic TCP port (in addition to the 32400), and both are accessible from the Internet. In any case, Comcast is not blocking 32400, at least not now, and that is irrelevant anyway because of the dynamic port mapping.

I have no idea if something really changed, or if I goofed up the previous firewall config...but wanted to set the record straight about the "no blocking."

Just to let you all know, while it is possible for an ISP to block a port for a customer/modem, it is incredibly tedious to do. 9/10 they are just going to disable your account if they find you doing something they don't like or if something (usually an automated spam filter/firewall system) makes an abuse complaint against your IP.

Blocking ports on the ISP side is traditionally done globally for everyone in a block (ie: Residential vs Biz) & generally only the big ones like port 25 & Windows FIle Sharing.

So if you are not able to remote in though plex or get the plex.tv/web to work, it's gonna be a firewall or NAT issue of one sort or another.

I think Comcast/Xfinity is blocking some traffic for plex.tv.  I have noticed that friends sharing their library with me do not show up on the menu to the left.  I checked the friend status is still there and after talking with friends of plex, they stated that they did not remove my access.  I checked plex from work and magically the friend servers are now present.  So then I went one step further with my phone.  Using carrier network I opened plex app and friend's servers were listed and accessible.  I switch my phone to my wifi network and my friend's servers were not accessible to me.

I am able to access my server when out of my home network and last check my friend was able to see my server.  It seems there is some obstruction only from my Comcast/Xfinity network to access friend's servers.

I am open to ideas outside of it being Comcast, any suggestions or thoughts here?

It was my own doing as a firewall rule on my network was causing the block.

Edit: 4:26pm PST
I just toggled the zero config option on Comcast router and my Plex server connection still works. I was back tracking all the changes I made and that zero config toggle to disabled was the last step I did. Paranoia makes me think that if you scan your own ports enough that comcast eventually unblocks them. Because my modem and routers are back to their original configurations.

Two days trying to connect... came across this post, zero config was enabled on my comcast modem; disabled it and Plex connected.
What a pain in the butt.

I am not having this problem.  It is very recent.  ALL the devices on my network (Plex, PlayOn, security cameras, etc.) have all stopped working.  I haven't found any ports that will work .

I see this thread is a little old, but may still be relevant for some. I had some issues this evening with a family member not being able to connect to my Plex server. My ports were open and I was able to access my server from outside the network fine (via phone on Verizon). My family is using the standard Xfinity broadband router. It turned out that the router was on a medium security setting which was preventing any connection to ports other than 80 & 443.

Thank you to those before me - Enabling Zero Config did the trick…
