If it helps anyone…On the PR2100, I was able to upgrade to OS 5 and the latest version of Plex Server using the steps below. Doing none of the steps below and instead just installing the latest OS 5 version of Plex Server worked with the exception of that Plex Server admin website would not launch by clicking the “Configure” button. Uninstalling and re-installing the Plex app using the PR2100 web interface did not resolve it. To resolve I had to:
Uninstall the Plex app from the PR2100 using the PR2100 web interface
SSH into the PR2100 and rename the plex_conf folder with this command: “mv /mnt/HD/HD_a2/plex_conf /mnt/HD/HD_a2/OLDplex_conf.OLD”
Shutdown the PR2100 using this command: “/sbin/poweroff”
Click Apps, click “Install an app manually”, select the Plex Media Server download from step #5
Wait for Plex to install
Clicking the Configure button now properly launches the Plex Server web app from the PR2100: http://192.168.1.225:32400/web/
Reconfigure Plex
Warning…Doing the above deleted my Plex Server metadata and the library needed to be rebuilt. This was not a big deal for me but may be for you. Follow the above steps at your own risk!
I have the WD PR4100. I have been watching this thread from when the OP was posted. It is encouraging to see the positive movement of successful transitions as time went on.
I have so much time invested in building my Plex and we use it so much, even though as long as people use the correct OS5 bin file shared in this thread things tend to go smoothly… I think I am still going to wait another month or two just to be on the overly cautious side and see if anyone still has any random challenges or not.
I just also wanted say how impressed I have been with how much support Plex has given to everyone and anyone who may have had a challenge in this thread…
Plex, can you please stand up and take a bow as we applaud you!
Has anyone successfully migrated to OS 5 and then used the very latest ‘Plex Media Server for Western Digital’ bin file (1.20.5.3600-47c0d9038) for OS 5 that was posted yesterday by Plex (November 16th)?
If so, did you encounter any problems at all?
Like others, I’m very wary of upgrading to OS 5 on my PR2100 and losing any of the library/metadata that I’ve worked extremely hard to build to it’s current state.
Okay…I have a question that has been referenced several times in this thread, but have not seen it fully fleshed out so I need a little extra help and guidance. I have my Plex on a PR4100.
In preparation for this upgrade I need to backup my Metadata / Customized Collections with Custom Posters / databases / etc… Viewing history would be nice but not as concerned about that.
As I understand it Plex does not offer an automated backup option for this (which while searching have seen the request going back more than 5 years), i.e. click a button or schedule the task to back up all personalized server info like Metadata / Customized Collections with Custom Posters / etc… to a zip or folder location of my choosing. Then a restore button where I can point a newly installed Plex server to that back up to restore all my customized work to a new install. And I totally apologize if I totally missed this feature!!!
So if it doesn’t so that then I believe the only option is to use SSH to find and copy all of my Metadata / Customized Collections with Custom Posters / etc… and then use SSH to restore it to the correct locations in a new install.
I know SSH is a wicked powerful tool, and even though personally and professionally I am very tech savvy, I have never used SSH and I can respect the power and damage I could do with learning the right commands as this would be my first time using SSH.
Could someone share the exact steps and SSH commands (including a recommend SSH client that works good with the PR4100) to
First copy / backup all of my server configurations and customized Metadata / Customized Collections with Custom Posters / etc…
Second copy / restore all of my backed up server configurations and customized Metadata / Customized Collections with Custom Posters / etc… on the newly installed Plex server.
Basically, I can easily backup the actual media easily, just need help with backing up the server settings / Metatags / databases / etc… @jtawil777 shared some steps above but he noted his steps deleted his metadata and databases, which is the complete opposite of what I am looking for.
I would feel a lot more confident to do the OS upgrade if I knew even in the worst case scenario I could restore my current Plex customized organization with a totally fresh install if needed and not lose all the hard work I have put into building it.
Thank you to @manslayerms on another thread for sharing what appears to be a full answer to my question above about how to back up and restore all of the Plex server databases / metadata / collections / etc… on a PR2100 / PR4100.
On other various threads, I have seen several people ask for a how-to help for SSH access to backup the Plex databases / metadata / etc… and the answer is usually learn it on your own as I will accept any risk of you screwing it up.
I am tech savvy…just never done it before. I just needed some guidance. This really helped.
But please remember… SSH is a wicked powerful tool that can brick your server. So when using SSH, do not experiment or just try something on a whim. And as all say, the disclaimer is you use SSH at your own risk. But with that standard warning said… the video above is straight to the point and is very easy to follow.
I now have my Plex server databases, custom collections / posters, customized metadata, playlists, view history, etc… all backed up now to another drive outside of the NAS PR4100 and I am feeling a LOT more confident with proceeding with the OS 5 upgrade.
Just a follow up to the directions above for backing up the server databases / metadata / etc… I wanted to give you an frame of reference of the time and storage needed to back the actual server files (not the media).
I have over 2K movies / a TB of pictures and family movies / 100% personalized posters for at least 65 custom collections / some playlists / and I have a collection of old time radio shows so I use them instead of music library since we have Spotify for that.
My PR4100 is hard wired through the GHZ network with Cat 8 cables. Using WinSCP (as shown in the video above) as my SSH client, I found my Plex_Conf folder to be 100 GB in size and is project to take up to 4 hrs to backup from the NAS to my laptop (but I think it will finish faster than that)
But the point was it was as easy and drag and drop, like you would with any Windows folder.
Need help anyone…updated to OS 5 and now plex doesn’t work properly cANT access it outside of network and local it only work on Apple TV and the apps but if I try to go to plex.tv And launch it won’t work…I read about ssh and I have never done it
I am having the same issue of high RAM usage with my PR4100 when running Plex. I have 16 MB of RAM and it taking up all of it. I have stop Plex and then restart it in order to free up the RAM. Is there any fix to this as it appears that disabling web access did not solve the issue.
I am also experiencing the same issue with files since the install, wont play any MKV files on Apple TV and Samsung Smart TV.
In addition to this I am experiencing lots of issues when playing TV series which randomly skip forward or wont play
Hello, I’m trying to download the OS5 version for my WD MY CLOUD EX 2 ULTRA, the issue is that the update is in MacBinary format and I can’t open it. Could you please advise me which program will open the format .bin? Thank you, Michal.
Hi,
I am having the same problem. I updated WD PR4100 to os5 then I checked to see if plex still worked. I used my desktop.
Plex worked right after update, played for about 30 seconds, then it stopped playback, and the server went away.
I can uninstall and install plex through the web page, but the server does not show up in plex app, or on my network page in windows explorer. My nas says it is installed, and if I click on configure, it takes me to a error web page.
I have enabled ssh and installed putty. I was even able to log in. I don’t know linux, so I was hoping you could show me what to do after I log into my nas.
I have PR2100 wih OS5 running. Why has WD and PLEX made it so difficult to update to the latest PLEX firmware?
What are the necessary steps to update PLEX software using the latest firmware? Who should I ask WD or PLEX?
Any information would be greatlty appreciated
My Cloud OS5 is not compatible with old app packages. As such we (Plex) needed to create a My Cloud OS5 version of Plex Media Server. If you download and install it from our website (you want the non-OS3 Western Digital entry)
Upon installing, it will detect your previous old install and migrate over to the OS5 app.
Sadly issues with OS5 continue and WD support teams are unable to help. The latest 1.21 versions of Plex media server for OS5 don’t update. Instead my WD Cloud just freezes trying. There’s no way to update manually. Plex needs to resolve with WD
I am still not upgrading to OS5 yet. Too much time invested for my Music streaming server
After hearing it took DAYS to rebuild and get it all correct after they updated to OS5…! ugh. dnt need that.
I will try and remove the image files from my WDMycloud EX2 Ultra so that it wont try to spend so much time dealing with those as many have stated elsewhere.
I realize the upgrade is needed for many issues with OS3 but Ive spent months building up my FLAC music files.
Yes they are backed up but still it was a lot of work to get it all correctly
Very scared it will get messed up…
Been waiting a while and watching this thread
Just dont wan tto go thru all the hassle of re-setup if it goes badly. My music is big important thing for me so…
