Connect Apple TV via Ethernet

My Mac mini is currently connected to my home network via wifi and my Apple TV is also connected via wifi. I am getting a lot of buffering problems with this setup, so I wanted to know if it was possible to connect my Apple TV to my Mac mini via Ethernet and still use PlexConnect?
I’ve tried setting it up this way by turning on internet sharing on the mini’s Ethernet connection. The Apple TV gets an address however cannot connect to PlexConnect.
Has anyone got a similar setup working?

Cheers, Brett

I am fairly sure using internet sharing messes up the ports PlexConnect requires, although you can probably get round this by using one of the more advanced setup options, e.g. running a reverse proxy using Apache.

I would suggest you may want to try a powerline setup, for less than £20 ($30) it will make life easy and sweet :)

We use powerline for our networking needs and ATV works great provided you go with 500mbps or so. We initially had a 200mbps set up but ATV lost connection roughly once a day. Since upgrading a few months ago, we rarely lose connection.

That sounds more likely you just got a better set of adapters, the lower rated set should have been more than enough to stream 1080P.

It may depend on your wiring and how much you want to future proof though.

If you had available coax in both locations where your wifi router and apple tv is located, you could use two of these ethernet to coax coverters also:

Thanks guys. Will check out a powerline setup. What brand would be recommended for those currently using this setup?

I have heard a lot of bad things about them eventually burning up and failing but if its your only option just google ethernet homeplug, netgear would be decent. Im curious why you are having issues with buffering. I run 720p mp4’s on my atv2 all day with no issues on wifi I just use a airport express wireless n.

TPlink - they are at the cheaper end of the market and have always been almost flawless for me (i think i had had to reboot them 3 times in 2 years).
