Works great unless your files are DTS audio
You could also try using the VLC app from Microsoft store as the Plex client instead. I find I need to run Plex on the Xbox first so that VLC will see the Plex server over wi-fi.
You could also try changing the Xbox audio options.
Tried the VLC app. It’s horribly broken unfortunately, especially with 4k. There are a lot of complaints about it.
As far as I’m aware, no combination of audio settings help here, as the xbox can’t decode DTS or pass it through to my receiver. Happy to be proven wrong on that though!
Played a few 4K movies this weekend. The movies with DTS (dca-ma) audio codec seem to play fine all the way thru but the True HD movies would error out a few times during the movie with “Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error”
I am still seeing constant buffering on playback on my Xbox One. This app used to work so nicely.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
PLEX on XBOX 1X has been constantly lagging and buffering. Never had this problem before playing all types of video, including 1080p. Updated plex today and server and X1, no change. What on earth is going on? ha
I’m having buffering issues with Xbox One as well. I’m streaming a playlist of regular DVDs. The first movie plays fine the second or third movie will start playing then start buffering during it and never gets out. I have to stop the movie and restart it, the movie restarts without issues. The Xbox One is plugged into a switch.
The computer that is the Plex server is on wireless and has a connection rate of 526 Mbps. The Plex server is a my gaming computer, it has a Ryzen 5 1600XP processor and 16 Gigs of RAM, so there is enough power there.
Any ideas on why I’m having buffereing issues?
Could you post some server logs (with logging enabled in the app) when encountering the buffering? Thanks.
I have turned on verbose loggin for the Debug Level in the server. Is there anything more I need to turn on?

Here are my logs. I tried to watch Halloween on Friday night and Inside Out on Saturday 9/28 and 9/29. Both are Blu-Rays and both were unwatchable do to buffering issues.
Heya. Thanks for the logs but you need to enable loggin in the app as well. You can find it in the app settings -> privacy -> log to media server. You should also disable verbose logging as that’s more information than we need. Thanks.

Here are some updated/new logs. It happened again this morning.
I’m now getting it on HEVC 1080P content along with the 4k HDR content. This is getting crazy this REALLY needs to be fixed
Similar experience with random buffering only from X1. Nothing obvious in server logs but when I try to access plex settings in X1 to enable player logging the app crashes.
X1 plex app version 2.19.3.70
Happening with me too, and it is highly annoying. Seems to only happen on my One X. Strange thing is it only does it on my local server, streaming from my VPS works fine. Are you using the Plexpass beta server by any chance?
I am also seeing a ton of buffering on Xbox One (not S or X). Content is 1080p H264 + AC3 5.1, not crazy bit rate, though higher bit rates do seem worse. Plex server says DirectPlay is active. It seems like this has gotten worse. Some movies, like Swiss Family Robinson are nigh unwatchable. Others, like The Incredibles, have specific areas where they buffer consistently. Is this the same issue or should I log a new thread?
@mcox156_hotmail_com Thanks for the logs, they are helpful. For everyone else could you try restarting your Xbox One before loading the Plex app and seeing if that has any effect on high bitrate content playback?
I generally do a cold boot of the Xbox One each time. But just in case I did a force quit of Plex, rebooted the Xbox, and then started Plex fresh. The symptoms remained unchanged.
I’m having the same problem on my XBox One X with 4K content encoded with HEVC at 16000kps, whilst Direct Playing. The same content plays fine with Direct Play using the app on my TV. (2015 Samsung). My TV, XBox and server are all next to each other and wired with Gigabit Ethernet. I’ve swapped over my XBox and TV ethernet cables to eliminate that. Everything points to an issue with the XBox client app.
I too have the problem. Even fairly small files (300MB) don’t play without buffering every 2 secondes. Is there any solution I could try? Already rebooted Xbox, rebooted app, rebooted router, PC, refresh data on plex, optimized bundles… Nothing did it, and the issue is with every file. Thanks!!!
