Have had the same problem slow skip ahead/back issue since switching to Plex from Windows Media Center. Very frustrating.
I have noticed that when using the HDHomeRun Xbox One App to watch live tv that skipping is instantaneous vs the 3-5 sec delay that Plex has. I’ve also noticed that playing full res WTV recordings that I still have saved via the Plex Xbox app allows instant skip forward/back with no buffering or delay.
Plex seems to be insisting that the poor performance of their app is a Microsoft issue, however based on my experience, it seems as others (Silicon Dust) don’t have the same performance issues.
I convert all tv I record to mp4 via mcebuddy and that allows quick navigation, however that doesn’t help when I want to watch something live or a fresh recording that I don’t want to wait for the conversion process.
I’ve scoured the web and these forums and this thread seems to be the only conversation where Plex has even acknowledged the problem and interacted with the user base. Bookmarking this and hoping someone/someday will fix this longstanding and painful issue.
From what I remember there are 2 Plex apps to choose from on the Xbox One. Make sure you have the latest one (one has whit ebackground latest has black i believe). They could have finally removed the old version but it has been a while too since searching and installing the latest version.
Constant problem here. No buffering or transcoding on other clients.
I notice that it will not let me play original quality or direct play with any combo of options, to actually watch something I need to start play then change to 720.
Yes, I’ve noticed my Plex recorded live TV which records at 1080 is always listed as 720 in the Plex Xbox One app. Is the buffereing due to constant transcoding?
I am also getting buffering on both my Xbox one x and my Xbox one s.
On the X it seems to happen when I stop a video and try to come back to it later. I need to constantly skip forward and back and it eventually works.
On the S it seems to stop playback after 15-20mins and get into a buffering loop. Same things, skip forward and back for about 2 mins and eventually it will start again.
Incredibly frustrating. All devices up to date with the latest Plex versions. Plex server updated and running on Intel QNAP. Never had this issue with the same media before. Only started last 2 months.
Yup same thing here, reverted back to plugging my apple tv in the xbox and airplay using Beamer for Mac. Having to manually drag/drop the video files i the player is becoming a nuisance I haven’t had to deal with in a long time now.
I am in the Xbox Insider Alpha Skip-Ahead, sometimes an getting an update every three days, so I figured it has to do something with this. Since the app that’s live on the xbox store (2.20.0.70) is built for an older OS, the guys at Plex can’t really support me (us if the posts before me are insiders too) yet because of this.
My issues occur on either of these devices:
Xbox One S wired
Plex server on MacBook Pro on wifi4 (802.11n)
Plex server on Mac Mini on wifi5 (802.11ac)
I am in the Xbox insider beta ring but it not only happens on my Xbox one X which is in beta but also my older Xbox One that is running public release dashboard
For me this only started happening a week or so ago so possibly related to one of the latest updates for the server or client app
Over the last several weeks I too have been having a buffering issue on my Xbox one. It’s a day 1 edition console hardwired to my wrt1900acs router (running lede firmware) over a cat 7 cable. Server is connected to the same router also over a cat 7 cable. Server has 16gb of ram and a ryzen 7 1700 processor.
I believe it is an issue with the Xbox one client because I have zero buffering issues streaming remotely to my Apple TV 4 or streaming remotely/locally to my iPhone X. On those devices I can skip around on higher bitrate content with no issues whereas on the Xbox I can’t go more than 10-20 minutes on higher bitrate content without having to restart the media due to a buffer loop.
Hopefully this is resolved soon or I’m gonna have to look into modifying my setup which is money I don’t want to spend at the moment.
I’m getting buffering a lot, and it’s because Plex is running at least two transcodes, even when only the audio track is being converted. Also everytime I skip, it opens another one or two transcodes, and again and again… also transcoded playback isn’t always shown in the Plex web interface.
It’s frustrating as I’ve just setup Plex on an SSD (everything does load faster), and I’m now facing these weird issues, but only via the Xbox app. It runs amazing on the mobile app!
I have apple tv, playstation, web clients, plex vr on the oculus go etc thoughout the house and the only one that is causing me grief is the xbox One app. Its effectively unusable approx 20 mins into any content - it just starts complaining about buffering. Its hardwired to a gigabit switch with a core i7 running the PMS.
Its tragic that this has been going on for so long!
Ill try to get some logs - if a get a chance. But its bonkers how bad this is compared to ANY other client
Came here to add my complaint. The XB1X should be able to handle direct play, but about 5 or 10 minutes in and I’m stuck on a buffering screen for 4K HDR content.
When I try transcoding with my i7 6700K rig, it won’t even start and Plex ■■■■■ the bed.
Why has this been allowed to go on for so long? Is it MSFT’s fault?
Edit: Tried 4K HDR on my LG B7’s WebOS and it worked with no issues, no buffering. It’s definitely the Xbox.
Yeah, I’m giving up I guess. I made the mistake of purchasing a refurb Xbox One S a week and a half ago for the sole intention of using it as a 4K media device since it can stream AND has the 4K bluray drive.
Since I bought it, I’ve been trying absolutely everything to get 4K media to play on the Xbox without buffering, and have determined that it is in fact impossible. Even after stripping all the audio codecs out and leaving AC3 only to ensure direct play, playing without buffering is not possible. There is no load on the server, the network is hardwired and more than capable enough (Xbox speed test says I’m getting 500+ Mbps), I thought maybe it was my RAID array, so I put a movie on a ramdisk with 2000+ MBps speeds and still got buffering.
I can play the same videos on a Chromecast Ultra without buffering, except of course it has it’s own plethora of codec issues, so as others have determined, obviously the issue is with the Xbox and/or the Xbox client. I don’t see how the Xbox One can’t handle a ~30 Mbps stream.
So my Xbox One S can’t play Plex 4K. My PS4 can’t because I don’t have a Pro with 4K (which I don’t want because it doesn’t have 4K Bluray). My brand new 2018 TV with Android TV can’t because they put a 10/100 network adapter on it. The Chromecast Ultra isn’t good enough because it can’t play audio streams direct, and that’s after you edit the profile it to get HEVC to work. Everything I’ve tried so far has cut corners or has incompatibilities somewhere which break some aspect of being able to use it to play Plex 4K.
Is there any device in the world that can reliably direct play 4k and high resolution audio formats except for the Nvidia Shield? I guess I need to sell the Xbox back and look for one of those and a standalone Bluray drive, which will cost even more. Any suggestions the Plex team has on a device that actually works without having to jump through hoops or re-encode my media? Or is Plex what I should be giving up on to save myself the headache?
Edit: Interestingly, in trying some alternatives, I tried using the Media Player application from Microsoft. It uses DLNA to stream. When I tried to stream from Plex’s DLNA server, my network usage shot up to 400+ Mbps and was constantly buffering. Next I tried using Kodi’s DLNA server and it played the same movie without issue (well, no buffering, then the player crashed on the Xbox after a little while, I’m just not allowed to watch 4K).
Have the same problem on Xbox One X. What the hell, Plex? It’s been reported for more than 3months… I doubt it’ll take an enormus amount of hours to fix.
And little to no response either to your paying customers…
