Constant Buffering on Xbox One

Plex Media Server.1.log (3.7 MB)
Plex Transcoder Statistics.1.log (5.5 KB)

Here is the latest logs from the server. It only happens on the xbox one and it appears to be centered around the DTS audio and subtitles. The subtitles are .srt

I am very annoyed with the lack of response from Plex considering that people pay for the memberships and there is hardly any type of support.

I’m also getting pretty fed up with this. Plex is unusable on Xbox One at the moment, with buffer freezes every 20mins seemingly on anything I try to watch :frowning: :frowning: :-1:

By the way, as an update, I grabbed an NVIDIA Shield today on sale for $130. Every movie I have plays with direct play and without buffering. Give up on the Xbox, get a Shield. Even if you hack up your files to get Direct Play on the Xbox, you’re still going to have buffering issues for some unknown reason. I’m pretty impressed with the fact that the Shield can manage to pull 900+ Mbps from the wired network! In fact, I think it streams better than the former HTPC/Gaming PC that I had hooked up to the TV.

Unfortunately, it’s yet another device to sit underneath my TV since the 5+ other methods of streaming to the same entertainment center all have some issue, but at least my Plex finally works well!

Grab the Shield while it’s on sale! The Xbox One is far from a new platform, even if the 4k versions are somewhat newer. If they (Plex/MS, whoever, not placing blame) can’t get it working by now, it seems unlikely to me that it’s going to happen.

I experienced the buffering every ~15 minutes as well on Xbox One S and from my testing the issue is being caused by audio transcoding anything that isnt ACC to ACC (it refuses to transcode to AC3 anymore) while direct streaming. If direct playing I experience no issues and my ā€œworkaroundā€ of not allowing direct streaming has ā€œsolvedā€ the buffering issue. Forcing video transcoding for every title is an unacceptable solution Plex; This issue needs to be fixed ASAP.

I have a range of Plex streaming devices in my home as well. Playback on most of them work really well except for the Xbox one. I experience buffering the most when streaming Live TV on the Xbox One. So on Black Friday, I went to best buy and got an NVidia Shield with the controller bundle for around $150~. Best decision made regarding Plex. It streams LIve TV without any buffering. It outperforms all the Roku streaming players in my home when streaming Live TV. I only use the Xbox One now to play Battlefield and thats it. It’s a horrible client for Plex.

:+1:

Glad to hear it helps live TV too, even though I don’t use that right now myself. I never really had any problems with most devices until 4k. Then I ran into all kinds of HEVC incompatibilities and buffering problems, probably just from equipment not built to handle 50+ Mbps HEVC streams. That on top of the slightly more livable frustration from so many devices not properly supporting advanced audio codec passthrough.

But yeah, the Shield is just good all around at streaming. Youtube, Youtube TV, Netflix, etc jump to max quality nearly immediately and rarely drop (I have a gig connection from a provider that doesn’t do sneaky traffic shaping, so it’s all up to the device), Plex doesn’t so much as hiccup. I think I’ve gone zero to fanboy in 2 days, but this thing has already alleviated so many frustrations in my streaming entertainment setup, and is the first Android TV device of the few I’ve had that’s actually pleasant to use.

Oh look. They released another feature no one asked for for as opposed to bug fixes and basic functionality. It even comes with a free trial.

My other problem is, I lost the internet… now cant watch a movie… What? The direct connect didn’t work at all. Plex is now a total joke!!!

I wouldn’t say no one asked for it. I for one am glad to see it…but it needs work. In order to take the less picky ears from roon, they will need to allow us to control the server with the mobile apps. At present this fails with Tidal for me. To even have a chance with moderately picky ears, they will need to allow the media player to be able to be configured to use an interface in exclusive mode. Plex is no substitute for say VNC controlling Tidal Desktop at the moment, but for getting Tidal on my plex clients it works fantastically. Since audio quality is not so much concern when playing through a soundbar.

And the Xbox One buffers a lot of Internet stuff. I’ve put it down as a codec problem. Pretty much anything that isn’t on your ISP’s cache servers or the LAN is going to be a problem on Xbox One. Multiple APPS behave this way. If you’re using WiFi your extra hosed. Software programs can’t fix our lack of infrastructure. Not intended to be rude or insulting. Not everyone can put in a reliable infrastructure on account of their property owner wouldn’t like it very much…or other jurisdiction having authority (the spouse/significant other/etc) That’s just life. I am full gigabit to everything and I have issues with the Xbox One. The 360’s on the other hand were great, almost tempted to throw up a Win 7 virtual machine just to get the 360’s working as extenders again.

We use the XBox to surf the nice pretty Plex library to figure out what we want to watch, then switch over to the WDTV Live to actually watch it. Better Video and Better Sound than the Xbox One. Occasionally will get lucky and the video will play ok on the Xbox. Again though this isn’t a Plex problem, it’s Microsoft crippling the Xbox because they still want to sell Win 10 computers to home users. Then they intentionally cripple the home version to get you to go pro, then they throw candy crush on their to get you to go all the way to workstations  (since on workstations you can finally be rid of that garbage)

When will the Xbox One app be fixed? Problem is the xbox plex app cant play some hdr format and many hd sound formats does not work so it use the ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  transcode. Nvidia Shield have no issues. Why cant the Plex app for Xbox also play the same files? So my NAS does not have tro use the bad transcode function. I want to just direct stream original quality.

I haven’t had issues with buffering on my Xbox One until last night, and just a 720p movie to boot. Maybe it was the DTS causing the issues, but my server can more than handle transcoding anything, so this is purely a client issue. I booted up my Raspberry Pi to finish watching the movie, not one issue, go figure!

Hey! For several weeks already i have ā€œBufferingā€¦ā€ in the middle of movies. Approx 5-9 times and i must stop and resume play to be able to watch further. When this is going to be fixed. I see updated coming but no fix for this. :frowning: We have movie nights with friends and this bug sucks a lot :frowning:

Hello, I have same buffering issue with DVR and Live TV content in an Xbox One (original). I paid for the flex pass only to find out about this, please provide updates and ETA for resolution, my main Plex client is Xbox, this is unacceptable!

I would agree,

It seems you get a good 15-30minutes of play back then you get a buffering in the middle of the screen, pressing back to menu and clicking play to resume will carry on for another 20-30minutes.

:frowning: - Come on the xbox should be the forefront of streaming media in the living room. Due to spec of console, the fact it outputs at 4k, accepts any audio codec you through at it and so on.

Good luck getting any word of mouth sales or chances to upsell or value add from customers like us plex team.

The thing is its not a isolated problem or response from them. Have a click around other threads. Here is a pinned one.

or

Oh yeah. I have similar bug on Xbox too. When i open tabs other than ā€œHOMEā€ or ā€œTV Programmsā€ it crashes. So only way to get in is from home tab and to click on ā€œmoreā€ in recently added movies row.
I’m also on Plex Pass and this is awful. Why work on new features when old ones doesn’t work as expected.

Over the last couple of weeks, plex is unusable at 1080p when using my Xbox One X. Constant buffering on anything if set to 1080p/Original. This happens with an 10.4mbps video and even with a 5.5mbps video file.

If I set it to 720p (High 4mbps), everything works fine, but cannot go any higher.

Network speed test shows 60mb download so not a bandwidth problem

I’m having the same buffering issue on my Xbox One X. Unfortunately it looks like there is no word at all on a fix?

Having the same issue, Can’t tell if this is the Xbox bug causing buffering on 4k content or just the bug causing buffering
