Error: Server not available (with optimized library)

I have run Plex on many different platforms, and they all work just perfectly fine. Just not this one. XBOX One plex app just cannot play any movie I have in my plex library. It plays TV shows just fine, but never a movie.

Every time I try to play a movie it says “Error: Server not available: There was an error communicating with the server … You can Retry or Go Home to select a different one.”

It’s been this way for months now and it’s very disappointing. I cant watch any movies untess I use Roku, android, Samsung plex app or web app.

Optimizing a library is the solution for when the app loses connection when entering a library section.

Since you say this occurs when you try and play a movie this is normally indicating that the transcoder has failed. Because all the app can see is that the server is no longer responding to it in the way it expects it reports that it lost connection.

To diagnose why exactly this is happening we would need to see a copy of your Plex Media Server.log when trying to playback one of these files as the log will show what is the server is actually doing or what is causing the playback to fail.

This support article explains where you can find your Plex Media Server.log file:
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250417-Plex-Media-Server-Log-Files

here is a log.

I think I posted the wrong file.

Looking at the log the only file I saw starting playback was on a Roku. Which makes it a little hard to track what was happening. I did see a playback session that looked like it stalled, but I believe it was also part of the Roku Playback attempt.

If possible a clean short log would make navigating what happened a bit easier. This would involve restarting the server, trying to playback the broken file for around 30 seconds, then restarting the server. What this does is minimize the amount of traffic put into the log and would be the same file you uploaded (The log.1 file)

If that isn’t possible, some information about roughly what order the xbox playback started would be helpful to try and narrow it down.

I did see some weird entries, but they appeared to be in connection to the Roku playback and shouldn’t have any bearing on the Xbox One side of things.

Try this one. I rebooted the server, was able to start Deadpool which was odd as I haven’t seen a movie play in ages. Then I exited the movie, went to another and it failed. Tried another and it failed. The second movie I tried to play and got the failure on was the man from U.N.C.L.E.

uhm… I guess this means that either you found a bug or you are giving up?

Sorry, Ninja’s are volunteers and sometimes real life situations come up that can cause us to stay away from the boards for a bit.

Looking at your log entry you have a mix of 10053 and 10054 errors for the playback attempts that fail. 10054 usually means that the Xbox is not liking the stream it is getting from the Server.
10053 means the server is shutting the stream down because it can’t send the packets out. I actually have not seen this error for the Xbox One before, so I am trying to find out more information on what would cause this. Everything I have found so far seems to point to network problems preventing the server from sending out packets which causes the server to shut down the stream.

Just want to weigh in that I am currently experiencing the same/similar issues as skywalker. Plex works fine on Samsng smart TV and laptop however when accessing movies (tv shows work fine) on Xbox one I get server not available errors. Even more bizarrely it’s started playing the wrong file (always trailer park boys which I forgot I had…)

The log attached is replicating the server not available error (not incorrect file played)

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Agreed with nwtoms above - continues to fail. I am having to resort to using a chromecast hdmi input through the XBOX ONE in order to get this working… which is a complete cluster.

Got a similar error: https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/218829/xbox-one-can-not-play-tv-series-since-plex-pass-was-added-to-profile#latest

This obviously is a bug and it needs to be fixed immediately!

I did raise an internal issue because of the failed xml parsing. It looks like it could possibly be related to internet media (IE Trailers) that are sending bad data causing the playback after the failed parsing to fail. But that is something the developers will need to investigate and track down if it is a server side error, xbox app error, or an error from the trailer provider.

I’m getting the same error message, when i try to play files with more then 4000kb/s bitrate. The Xbox app want to transcode all those files but my server isnt able to do that. So the app is worthless now for me because 95 procent of my files are in high bitrate.

All the other apps are working fine with the videos so the only problem is the xbox app.

Try this if it’s only certain files (especially just large ones): https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/217328/server-not-available-message-when-trying-to-play-high-bitrate-videos#latest

Hopefully just storage on the Media Server host
