I’m going to do some research and talking to folks.
- What is the intent
- How did we get to where we are now.
That’ll come from both Product and Engineering teams.
This’ll take a bit

I’ve spoken to the engineer.
This is a Workflow change.
The change includes being able to import that content which you watch in other places.
There is still a little bit of clumsiness in the reporting HOWEVER
– the fundamental change is Watch History / ViewState is no longer Server-specific
– These have been moved to the account level.
e.g. You can start watching on one server and pick up where you left off on another server which has the same content
Over the next releases, the little issues will resolve HOWEVER
– Watch history is HISTORY, and NOT ViewState
There is no API / nothing to do to “Queue something up to your Continue Watching” short of playing it the minimum amount of time.
Investigating the other server I showed above; they are also making the same core workflow change. The 'Legacy" option will be removed.
I looked at the online services as well. They already have this workflow.
Bottom line, your workflow must change. You now put things in your WatchList.
Just to clarify, the “Mark as Watched” not resulting in the next episode being added to On Deck is considered a bug then or expected?
I think , BUT AM NOT 100%, it is one of the rough edges they’re working on.
When we chatted, we did identify several rough edges and I personally am aware of changes/completions already in progress so I’m sure there are more.
The issue centers around Continue Watching.
If you’re already watching something and mark that episode as watched
THEN it does seem logical for the next episode to be On Deck…
AGAIN, i’m not 100% certain of the final design. I, like you, will need to see what is done. I’ll find out when it goes to internal Alpha test. You’ll see it as “Beta”.
Just to add further clarity, this doesn’t apply in most of my cases. I generally watch the content via Infuse or offline (after downloading it) and then mark it as watched, so no view history for that file will be present, it will just be a ViewState toggle.
This is exactly the problem I have.
Recently the numbering for a show got messed up, and it turns out I had not seen episode 6, despite it being “watched” in plex.
In the past I could have set episode 6 to unwatched, mark episode 5 as unwatched, and then mark episode 5 watched again, and Continue Watching would que up episode 6. Now, it does not.
Worse, if I watch episode 1 of a show at a friend’s place, and then mark episode 1 as watched on Plex at home, the show does not come up under Continue Watching at all.
They need a “add to Continue Watching” feature or something IMO.
I shouldn’t have to let an episode I have already seen elsewhere play on Plex in order to get the show into Continue Watching, but now there is no other way.
Hopefully they will fix this soon. Because the fact it is not continuing to show stuff that are marked as watched is annoying. And defies the point of the continue watching bit to not actually show everything that is part watched. I don’t watch everything on Plex.
I am still seeing this issue… So frustrating.
I tried to t-shoot with someone from Plex but didn’t have much luck… Anyone from Plex looking into this still?
I’m still having this issue as well.
One of my previously watched shows just started back up for Season 4 (The Boys).
S04E01 was in Continue Watching, then I marked S04E01 as watched, and it was gone…
I have E02 and E03 in the library, they just don’t show up in Continue Watching.
The whole Continue Watching feature/function is useless…
Hi,
Thanks for the information, I work on a tool that sync user watchstate, and this is effecting the users. To simply re-produce the issue do the following,
Have a new show that unwatched at all, simply mark E01 as watched, the show won’t show up. In continue watching, from your replies i assume thats the intended behavior with i don’t agree.
If there is no fix for it, Is there an API endpoint we can target other then sending :/progress event which i don’t think you intend for it to be used that way?
Yes, experiencing this myself. Is there a workaround!
I’m annoyed with it as well. I sometimes forget about shows that I manually mark as Played (that I watched elsewhere) because they don’t show up on the Home page. Especially for seasons that are split into parts. Part 2 is not a premiere episode.
My tracking apps don’t update this way either, and I have to manually mark them as well.
Any news on this…?
This is still an issue for me. Unfortunately. it seems getting any help from Plex on issues such as this seems impossible.

This is a really annoying issue, at least there used to be a workaround for things to appear manually.
Now there is no manual workaround… WHY CAN WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER WHAT WE WANT TO CONTINUE WATCHING… ABSOLUTELY STUPID
Another bug report here:
Server Version#: 1.41.1.9057
Player Version#: 4.140.1 (web)
Ensure the following settings:
To reproduce this:
Expected: The new episode should show up in Continue Watching.
Actual: The new episode does not show up in Continue Watching,
Alternative ways to repro:
I do use multiple Plex servers and switch playback between them. But this should not have an impact on CW because it’s claimed here that:
the fundamental change is Watch History / ViewState is no longer Server-specific
Calling Plex Staff… Are we able to get some help here please? I’ve been trying to get someone to help me for a while now.
This clearly looks like a bug but there is no way i can see to log and track a bug. I was told to come here but it is hard to get attn.
help?!
It’s impossible to get any attention on this one
Is is still broken for me.
I don’t know how much I can contribute here but, I’ll try.
This is my current “Continue Watching” which is accurate. I’ve been testing the transcoder and also trying to get HEVC in Chrone on Nvidia in Linux ![]()
I just looked through all my settings and I can’t find anything related to “On Deck” as we used to know it.
New movies and series content shows up in the Recently Added but not an “On Deck” for those series I’m watching which just got a new episode.
What am I missing ?
