I have my three different libraries set up to contain a mix of Photos & Videos. This does NOT pertain just to Mac but to all Media Servers in general.
Normally, I select one image to be placed at the beginning of each folder to represent easily what the folder will contain.
When generating a new library and/or updating a folder, I am nor sure how posters are selected, but normally, they do not pick up on the first image in the folder.
What I would like to see is a change to allow us to indicate which poster I would like the ‘Scan Library Files’ to choose without having to manually select them myself. This would save a LOT of time.
I believe that could be done by adding these features.
- Select #___ image in each folder (you would enter a number in the field. example ‘Select #1 image in each folder’ would select the first image in each folder).
- If a poster has already been select, don’t change it.
- Reset all posters.
Having these options available would GREATLY reduce time spent manually doing this, but still give you a chance to reset the posters at any time.
Is this about a photo library (with photos and videos), or are you talking about a movie/tv library and refer to the poster files as „photos“?
I was under the impression that Plex is already picking the 1st cover image if multiple local media assets are specified in a movie / show folder (e.g. cover.jpg, cover-2.jpg…), if you follow the naming schema for local media assets (not the 1st random image file).

Just thought it’s worth mentioning there’s already two related (though, different) suggestions to improve the handling of key photos
Both of these articles do not make it any easier to preselect posters based on the parameters that I have suggested.
Certainly, if I wanted to change the poster of a folder that used my suggested picks, I could still do that, but why require manual selection in the first place.
In my three Plex Media server, I contain over ½ million photographs/videos with in hundreds of folders by year, month and day (and even several events in a single day) dating back to the 1920-30s. I would NOT like to have to select manually posters for any of the these folders like I am forced to do now.
Understood. That’s why I wrote they’re somewhat related but different… and didn’t suggest to merge them.
