Conversion failed playback error when subtitles are over (usually at the end)

I would expect 1.32.6 to go public soon - hopefully within the next 7 days.

The fix for the server crashing when the transcoder crashes (eg the subtitles isuse) is included in the current Plex Pass beta release

How do I roll to previous versions like 1.32.0.6950? I don’t see any option here:

https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-media-server

  1. Plex does not make old versions available for download.

  2. 1.32.6 went public shortly after your post.

Using Plex on WebOS on my LG C3, but it doesn’t seem to have been fixed on 1.32.6.7557.

Episodes are still crashing near the end.

I’ll make a new topic about it, but figured I’d at least also say it here.

Hello! The fix on the last beta worked (not crashing anymore), but now the very last subtitle does not appear.

Thanks - I have been waiting for confirmation of that still being an issue for some videos.
I will need debug server and Plex client app logs together with a sample file that has the problem. is it external srt file or within an mkv ?

Ideally - see if the issue arises with a short clip eg a 5 minute clip - that would make it easier - otherwise would need a zip of the full media file - uploaded to external location and link shared by Private Message

Suggest raising a new forum topic for this as suggested here Conversion failed playback error when subtitles are over (usually at the end) - #78 by sa2000

I am not sure if the Plex for LG app have the logging option referred to here https://support.plex.tv/articles/216955788-logging-for-smart-tvs-tivo/ - but do enable it if it is there when reproducing the issue to get logs

and for the server debug logging see server logs article

And for providing samples - but please confirm the sample does repro the problem by adding it to a test library and trying out first - https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

The crashing issue is now resolved, thanks for fixing it.

But I can confirm that the last subtitle does not appear.
Happens to all my videos with subtitles in a MKV-file.
I did not test it yet with an external SRT.

is it possible to get a few minutes clip from the mkv file showing the problem
You can use mkvtoolnix to create the clip - see Generating Sample Files from Media | Plex Support

If you manage to get a smallish file to reproduce the problem - by adding it to a new test library and trying out, then please get me the [Plex Smart TV Logs]( Logging for Smart TV App | Plex Support) and debug Plex Media Server logs and which subtitle text got lost - together with a zip of the mkv clip that reproduces the problem - this would need uploading externally and sending me link by PM

Thanks

When will this be fixed on the QNAP App? I’m running Version 1.32.7.7621 on my QNAP Server and still can’t play any mp4 videos with srt subtitles without it crashing.

The fix for the specific Plex Transcoder crash relating to subtitles has already been released. It was released in 1.32.6.7521 Plex Media Server - #600 by chris_decker08

  • (Transcoder) Unexpected behavior when subtitles ended before the end of video (#14426)

The 1.32.6 release became public release in 1.32.6.7557 and after that we had the later 1.32.7 release 1.32.7.7621 as public release and we have 1.32.8.7639 as beta

See Media Server Downloads | Plex Media Server for Windows, Mac, Linux, FreeBSD and More

If you are continuing to have Plex Transcoder crashes streaming media with subtitles, please provide debug server logs so that it would be investigated. A sample clip with subtitles may be needed to reproduce the problem

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-11-17_18-12-56.zip (4.3 MB)

Here are my logs, I tried to play a movie with SRT subtitles and switched the settings around to see if I could fix it to no avail.

Thanks for the logs

All the errors appear to be because the transcoder is failing to access the subtitles file from the transcoder temp directory into which Plex Media Server saved the subtitle data into

This is one example of the error being logged by the transcoder

Nov 17, 2023 18:11:46.571 [140635266149176] ERROR - [Req#a502c3/Transcode/cvyiv53h198nrvxe6ocd2gtl/58dbc271-25cf-4752-93d6-f879316ade68] DataVol1/Transcode/Transcode/Sessions/plex-transcode-cvyiv53h198nrvxe6ocd2gtl-58dbc271-25cf-4752-93d6-f879316ade68/temp-0.srt: No such file or directory

A few milliseconds earlier, Plex Media Server put the subtitles into that file

Nov 17, 2023 18:11:46.565 [140635274373944] DEBUG - [Req#a502bb/Transcode] Downloaded stream from [http://127.0.0.1:32400/library/streams/2403?X-Plex-Token=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] (codec: srt) to temporary file [DataVol1/Transcode/Transcode/Sessions/plex-transcode-cvyiv53h198nrvxe6ocd2gtl-58dbc271-25cf-4752-93d6-f879316ade68/temp-0.srt]

So in server settings, you have the transcoder temp directory set to DataVol1/Transcode

Could you try putting in an absolute /share path to the folder to see if it makes a difference ?
e.g. /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/xxxxxx
or whatever the exact syntax is on the QNAP

I see you were using Plex Web on Google chrome - what do you have in the subtitles settings in Plex Web Advanced Settings for Player

I think i may have stumbled upon something strange, I am also experiencing crashes and my logs are exactly the same as yours, I changed the directory of the transcode but it still did the same.

Can I ask if you have changed your ā€œauto play countdown timeā€ to ā€œimmediatelyā€ in the settings of the player you are using? I’m using WebOS but mine is located in settings under ā€œplayer experienceā€

Basically the transcoder crashes if you have ā€œimmediateā€ skip on with no video to follow what you are watching and I have to force close the app in order to watch anything again, setting anything other than ā€œimmediatelyā€, I set mine to 5 seconds and it works as intended.

Holy Moly it’s finally fixed! Thank you so much I’ve been struggling with this for months now. It was working fine for a long time so I’m not sure what broke it, but changing the transcode directory to /share/CACHEDEV1_DATA/DataVol1/Transcode fixed it.

THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

Read my previous comment to see what fixed my issue.

Glad that fixed it for you!

Great

Somehow the transcoder was ok with its temp directory being DataVol1/Transcode for all but subtitles. Is that how it was specified in the server transcoder setting? So it is a relative path ? Paths on linux I would expect to start a / character.

I will find out if we are supposed to be supporting relative paths in settings.

Not sure why that specified path worked for the video and audio streams but not subtitles. How does DataVol1 show up in output of df linux command?

Hello!
Just to inform you that the latest subtitle in a file is still not appearing. I honestly don’t know how to provide everything you have asked for, though.
Thank you!

The issue of the last subtitle not appearing has already been referred to our Smart TVs app development team and at this point, I do not need any more diagnostics for this

hi, so i’ve been ahving this problem on our LG smart TV, but I’m not sure if this is related to this specific topic, since the error i get seems to be different from what folks are getting here? mine seems to be non non-specific ā€œunexpected errorā€ and i get Code: 3, the only similarity i have is i usually get the error towards the end (~2min left) regardless if subtitles are over or not. If it is in fact related i would be happy to help in any way i can.

for what it’s worth I’m using an LG Smart TV on webOS: 8.2.0-710 and afaik I’m in the latest player build for web os and latest server public build. And I’m on w10 os build 19045.3803
also here’s a picture of the error i get on our TV
