How would I convert a present “friend” user to a “managed user”?

There is no need to do that. You can invite your friend into your Plex Home. This activates Fast User Switching and gives your friend access to the free mobile Plex apps from your own Plex Pass.

But you can only do it if your friend is not already a member in a different Plex Home.

You are inviting the existing user account. Of course the user name stays the same.
