Received an email from Plex that my credit card expired. Went in to correct it but saw the cost went up from $29/year to $69/year.
I submitted a ticket to “Billing” asking if there is a less expensive option since I only use Plex to maintain the DVDs that I purchased years ago (over 300). I do not use Plex for live TV, etc. and do not use remote viewing.
No response.
I received a 2nd noticed the account will be deactivated in 4-days so I submitted another ticket.
Anyone know how to contact Plex directly?
Anyone know if there is a less expensive subscription for my purposes? I cannot find anything.
Only if you use the “Fruity” app store to buy it. It’s $10 less regularly.
Then you don’t need to pay at all, if you have no use for the other features of Plex Pass. https://support.plex.tv/articles/201751006-plex-pass-feature-overview/
But if you like them and can’t imagine living without them, then there is the lifelong Plex Pass available. That’s a one-time payment.
Checked out the link and I do not have any need for the Plex Pass. Maybe sometime in the future.
So, what happens if I let my current pass expire? I have all my media on a NAS that supports transcoding. Will my apps on my smart TVs and iPad still allow me to access my media or do I have to set up a new account?
Theoretically nothing,
unless your server is set up in such a way that other clients in your home network see it as a “remote” server.
Which can happen if for instance it is running behind a second “router”-type device, or if it’s running in a Docker container which has not been set to use “host” networking.
Start playback on your regular Plex client.
The server dashboard should show “Local” as the connection type. If it says “Remote” or even “Indirect”, you need to investigate why that is.
If you’re referring to hw-transcoding… keep in mind that‘s a Plex Pass feature. Without a Plex Pass, transcoding will depend on the NAS‘s CPU. Those tend to be under-powered.
So, I did get a chance to check things out. Per Otto, it does show local when playing. I still have my Plex Pass until it expires within days so will see what happens then. According to Tom, HW transcoding may no longer work after that.
I simply am not going to put up with a $40/year cost increase to get access to services that I do not use. I would stay if it were just the same $29/year.
I see others are moving local media to other solutions such as JellyFin which I may check out.
