Crash on launch after 1.23.2.4625 update

Where should I go for help / assistance fixing my server?

BUILD/CONFIG:

  • Windows Server 2016 Essentials Edition (2021-05 Cumulative Update installed)
  • Intel i3-7100, 8gb RAM, SSD OS Drive & Storage Pool for media.

REPRO STEPS:

  1. I installed the (bad) 4625 release, which caused a crash soon after the Plex Media Server launches.
  2. I have since manually downloaded the 4656 installer executeable, and completed the “repair” option during set up.
  3. After launching the server, I was able to load the “about” screen from right-click on system tray, but it still crashed soon thereafter.

I’m crashed out here - waiting for a recommendation since 4656 was (supposed) to fix the issue, but I’m still crashing.

The issue described in that announcement was it creating a new preferences file which I don’t think would have caused a crash. The issue caused the server to launch as if it is a new server.

If you can provide your server logs we can take a look to see what might have caused the crash. Feel free to message them to me.

I’m moving this to a public topic.

My PMS is doing a similar thing after updating to 1.23.2.4656; immediately after launching the Plex server, the icon will appear in the task bar for 15-20 secs and then disappear.

Much sadness after running PMS for +5 years, and now it’s worthless.

Can you provide your server logs so we can try to see what it was doing when it crashed

This looks to be related to DVR recording schedule. Possibly to an EPG update

Can you go to the plex data folder and inside that /Plug-in Support/Databases

In the Databases folder there should be three files that start with tv.plex.providers.epg.cloud a .db .db-shm and .db-wal file. Back these files up somewhere just in case like put in a folder on your desktop then try to start the server up again without them in the Databased folder. If it launches, it should start rebuilding the guide.

Image is from a Mac but files should be the same

@RemohGramps Your server was also processing DVR recording schedule last. I also recommend backing up the tv.plex.providers.epg.cloud files i mentioned in previous reply to desktop or wherever then deleting them from the Databases folder and try to start the server up

I located 3 files that you indicated, and I moved the files to an archive location. I started up the PMS server and the 3 files appear to be recreated. The PMS server is also staying alive, which it did not do previously, and it is playing shows as requested.

Ok thank you for letting me know that got it to start. If it is possible can you share those three files that you archived? If they are corrupted I would like to add them to bug report so devs can examine them. (you can message them to me by clicking on my username/avatar and click message button)

I just messaged the 3 files in a ZIP to you…

PMS was online for a couple of hours last night, and then self-terminated sometime this morning. I restarted PMS, but don’t expect it to stay on.

Looking forward to the forthcoming fix…

+1

It ran for 30-60 minutes before crashing after moving the tv.plex.providers.epg.cloud files to a backup location.

I’m eager to see another update that fixes the issue correctly. (The rollback procedure seems cumbersome!)

Do y’all have a sporting event or all teams games set to record? Noticed both your logs seem to end with it trying to process what I think is sports. I am wondering if you delete that scheduled recording and recreate does it help at all.

I probably do have one “sports team” scheduled recording. Do I need to re-delete the tv.plex.providers.epg.cloud files, then try to remove the scheduled program before it crashes?

Yes. Unfortunately there is no way to remove it from a file and must be done in interface.

Interesting. I have the same issue. After upgrade, server starts then just dies after a few moments. Icon disappears. I have one sports team scheduled to record all games. I’m going to try cancelling that recording and upgrading again to see if it fixes the issue.

So I was having the same issue with the server just dying just a few moments after launch with 1.23.2.4656. Server would just stop running and icon would disappear on Windows Server 2016.

Rolled back to 1.23.1.4571 to resolve.

Saw this thread, deleted my scheduled sports recordings for all Boston Red Sox MLB games. Upgraded back to 1.23.2.4656. No more problems. Server stable and normal once again.

Looks like you’re getting closer to the root cause of the problem.

+1, deleted Seattle Sounders (MLS) and it has been stable ever since.

Love to see the long-term fix in the next update, but at least I’m unblocked for now!

I have the same issue it appears. Plex continues to crash within a minute of startup every time. Before finding this thread I tried re-installing, restarting the PC etc… to no avail.

I’ve tried backing up the epg files as mentioned and the server stays running for a while but eventually crashes after about 5 minutes. When it is rebuilding the epg there are 6 files, the 3 files mentioned above plus 3 additional “…loading…” files. I have managed to capture these in one of the backups. I’ll send a zip file of my logs and the epg files.

I’m going to restart the server again and delete the sports recording before the epg can rebuild and hopefully stop the crash.

  • Windows 7 x64
  • Live TV/DVR
  • Sports team set to record
