Crash when fast-forwarding in specific files (recent issue)

Hi,

My files are all in MKV (x264) format. I have the app set to “Auto” (which means it does Direct Play) and my content always plays without issues.

But recently, I’m having an issue i never had before. Some files, when i try to fast-forward or rewind, the app crashes (and the TV restarts). These same files, if i stop watching, when i go back to it, i cant resume because the app crashes (and the TV restarts). The only way is to watch from the beginning (now imagine how annoying that is).

How can i troubleshoot this? I have no idea where to start.

Server Version#: 1.18.7.2438
Player Version#: 2.012 (Smart Hub app on a 2014 Samsung UE48H6200)

Was this happening with the previous version of PMS (v.1.18.6)?

Yes it was happening with the previous version of PMS (i assume it was v.1.18.6 but i cant recall).

In fact, i only updated to the latest (1.18.7.2438) yesterday, before posting here.

But, in any case, this issue started very recently (this week).

Update the smarthub Plex app to the very latest version (side load it per USB if necessary).

Yes, I have noticed reboots too on my Samsung TV… Also on direct play and some mkv files… It just reboots the whole tv…
That’s why I started with the default transcode setting, that “solved” it. But creates a new bug : Resuming Playback Starts Earlier than when Playback was Stopped

I believe 2.012 is the latest version of Orca’s app.

Edit: I just checked and it seems to be the latest.

Is there any pattern at all, that you’ve noticed?

Is it the files, that are different or even corrupted somehow?

Or is it completely Plex’s fault? And is it the player app or PMS?

Transcoding is done real time right?
I don’t think my HP microserver handles it properly.

Specs:
Intel Celeron CPU G1610T @ 2.30 Ghz
16 GB RAM
WD Red hdd’s

But i’ll try it anyway. It’s been a while since i used that transcoding. Directplay 99% of the time works perfectly.

Oh, there is a 2.013 version released in September 2019!

Small fixes that dont seem related to my issue but i will update anyway! I have to check if it comes up on the Smart Hub updates, otherwise i’ll sideload it.

no, they are not corrupt, but i have noticed on HEVC high quality files, that samsung reboots
also, i have microserver gen 8 , witn xeon 1265 cpu, so i can handle transcoding, also on good quality files

thats why i have configured transcoding as default
but now i have issues with : reboots & not resuming at correct point

Same server
Different CPU.

Btw Fabio, are your reboots happening when you fast-forward or rewind ?

Just to confirm its the same issue.

Smart Hub store is not showing 2.013 on my tv
Means i will have to sideload… this is all a hassle but anyway…

someone linked it here

A much better CPU

No, my reboot is happening when I start the episode… Probably also when I resume it…
Maybe the direct play is not able to support that codec… So I don’t care those reboots, I like transcode…

But the only issue left with transcode, is that I am unable to resume an episode/movie where I left off, it always strarts 20 min earlier…

to me, it doesnt make sense to use Transcoding as a default solution to play everything.

i havent tried sideloading plex 2.0.13 because honestly, i dont think it will make any difference, from 2.0.12 i have right now, not to mention the hassle of preparing the usb drive with sammywidgets (people reporting it wasnt working on the other thread).

but i will try something simpler, which is to play the mkv files i’m having problems with, from a usb drive, directly on the tv.

will report later.

Yeah, 2.013 Will not make any difference… But I think since it happens with direct play, it will be a Samsung issue… So indeed it’s a good test to play those files without plex

I copied a few of the problematic files to a flash drive in order to play them directly on the TV.

When loading the subfolder where the files are, TV reboots immediately.

So… this seems to be a problem with the TV, not being able to play these video files. For some reason.

Playing them via Plex is actually better. Sure, i cant forward or rewind, but at least i can watch from start to end!

Removing the soft embedded subtitles with mkvtoolnix will solve the problem, i I don’t know why but it does.

I did have the same problem usually with Netflix series with many soft embedded subs.

there should be another way , instead of always modifying the files
it should not crash
it should be resolved in PMS; i never had this issue a year ago with older PMS servers
