I have been creating collections. The movies inside the collections are still on my list. Kind of defeats the purpose of creating a collection in my opinion.
How can I hide only the movies inside collections?

You can set the collection behavior for an entire library in the advanced library preferences of a library. Alternatively you can override that default for individual collections on the advanced tab when editing a collection.
Options are:
Keep in mind that Plex will only list collections inline your library while it’s sorted by title!
So I’ve been trying to get this to work, but it just… doesn’t quite work.
The library is set to “Hide items which are in collections”. For the collection, I have tried both “Library default” and “Hide items in this collection”, although both behave the same. On the Library tab, the movies are only hidden if I sort “By Title”. I prefer to sort by “Date Added” so I can watch whatever has been recently added - but if I choose this sorting option, now those “hidden” movies show up again. I don’t see what filtering/visibility has to do with sorting.
That’s how it works.
Hiding the items in the other sorting methods doesn’t make sense, because e.g. the “date added” can be radically different for each member of a collection. So where would you sort the collection to appear then?
I see what you’re saying, the issue being that a movie and a collection are two different things. I understand collections won’t have a single value for attributes like date added, release date, rating, duration, etc. but I still feel like Plex has some options here.
Unsortable items could be placed at the end of the list, just like how if you sort by something like “Content Rating” and you have a movie without that piece of metadata, it shows up after all the other items that do have content rating data.
Personally, I still believe filtering and sorting are two entirely separate operations. I don’t agree that just because something can’t be sorted, filtering should stop working. If the library or collection are configured to “Hide items which are in collections” then I would expect literally that - do not ever show these things to me, no matter what, even if you can’t sort them - unless I explicitly seek these items out by looking at the collection tab.
(Also, if we’re only talking about “date added”, then a collection should actually have a sortable value here, the date the collection was created. I understand that doesn’t address all the other sorting options, though).
