Custom Library Section Icons

Kind of a pain on roku since there are no lables
I have several TV and Movie sections, and when browsing on the roku you can't see the section name till you select it.. Also on the iOS client the icon is dominant vs the little label.

I would love to be able to add clear distinct icons to each of these so I could pick out Kids sections VS my Movie and TV sections etc.

I am not sure if these icons are hard coded in the current clients or dynamically loaded however I am sure legacy support would not be an issue and newer clients could just check for a custom icon.

This is actually available on the Roku client. If you have setup custom icons in PMM, you need to chose the square icon setting for the Roku client and they will show up, I have done this....

? How do you change the Library icon in PMM?

this was originally posted way back in the PlexGrid beta, but applicable today…

just to be clear, in the PMM, when a section is highlighted, change section artwork, choose Icon.

This option is greyed out for me, and every thread I've found citing this feature indicates it's not enabled.
I have a Linux server and a Windows server running, and it's disabled on both.

The “Customize Section” button is always disabled (Windows / Linux)… As far as I can tell it has never been available other than MAYBE on the OSX PMS?

According to this thread it was basically never fixed / completed.

I was hoping for a developer response on this one since it looks like there was some effort to make such a feature but it was never complete.

It is most needed on the Roku since the text does not appear till the icon is selected, so for those of us with several sections we just have a long row of movie and TV icons with no meaning.

The mobile iOS and Android clients also use the icons, they at least have the text under them but it wold look much sharper if we could customize those icons for quicker identification and style.

Voting to either finish it (preferred) or remove it from the Mac server. One way or another - don’t leave half-implemented broken stuff in there.

Do not remove it from Mac PMS =P I like my custom icons

Do they actually show up anywhere? I tried setting them a while back, but they didn't appear in the desktop client, iOS clients, web client - anywhere that I could tell.

My main devices are android devices and roku’s and they show up on: Vizio Co-Star, All Roku’s, and Playbook

Your right iOS, Desktop, and Web Client they do not show

So you need an Apple server but you need a non- apple device to see them client side… That is one very odd, very incomplete feature.

After going back and forth looking for someone else to answer it, I just went through the code myself, and found that you can update the database in the file “com.plexapp.plugins.library.db” with the user_thumb_url (icon), and user_art_url (fanart) for each section individually.

The change shows up on the Roku by exiting the channel and going back in.

It's great that there's a workaround for it but this really should be an integrated feature.

I'd love to have this as well!

I made these changes to my system last Spring. It makes for a much more pleasant viewing experience. My PMS server is on a Win7 machine, and I use all Roku's in my house, All my shared users use either Plex/Web, or Roku's, for the most part. I followed the directions on the following Blog page to do this, and host all my icons that are used on a PhotoBucket account.

My section icons when viewed in Plex/Web look like basically the following now (I've made some changes since this was captured, but you get the idea...).

It's very simple to do. I spent far more time creating some of the custom icons then I ever did in actually setting any of this up.

Have fun!

If I can get SQLite working with visual studio 2013 I think I'll build a library icon changer.

While this is one of the first suggestions for that feature, the discussion is heavily laced with outdated features or UI references. Therefore closing those older ones in favor of a more recent version
