Debugging setup failures

So you went through the sties for removing old .Net components and no joy .....

Well the only other suggestion is the standard answer I gave for this before the evidence that .net was the cause .. And that is :

Enable the windows 8 firewall and re run setup

That did the trick. Thanks for the assistance.

I am very confused by this so I hope this is the information that is needed. If there is more please let me know. Thanks in advanced!

I am very confused by this so I hope this is the information that is needed.

Needed for what ?

What is the problem?

What is the symptom?

What are the error messages?

What Setup Failure did you get ?

Anyway - you can try this: Resetting System and Framework Bundles

I'm attempting to update Plex Media Server from 0.9.10.1.585 to 0.9.1101.678. Downloaded the installer, here's the error I get:

0x80070660 - The Temp folder is on a drive that is full or is inaccessible. Free up space on the drive or verify that you have write permission on the Temp folder.

This is on my SSD, there's about 30GB free so that's certainly not full. I cleared out %appdata%\Local\Temp, there's still a few files that are all in use, but most of it got cleared away. I checked the Temp folder permissions and they look proper, the system and all users have Full Control for the Temp folder and all subfolders/files within. Have tried with UAC on and off, have tried with anti-virus on and off. I've searched the error code, I don't see any of the same code for Plex, but there are other programs with this error code. Might be more indictive of something weird with Windows, but so far I've not found any working solutions.

Any ideas? Log is attached. I greatly appreciate any help!

A support page was recently raised warning against removal of package cache files : https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/202967086-Errors-trying-to-upgrade-install-or-uninstall-Plex-Media-Server-on-Windows

If the package for the current version has been deleted, you could see if you can re-install the current version and then retry the upgrade to 0.9.11.1

General points:
Always double check the downloaded exe files by right clicking and selecting Properties and seeing that there is a Digital Signatures tab with an entry for Plex Inc. Absence of either means corrupt download

Always launch the downloaded exe in an account that is an administrator account and also ensure right click 'run as administrator' is selected

Thanks for your help, it actually wasn't the ProgramData folder in the end, but the C:\Windows\installer directory. I had it linked to a directory on another drive which was disconnected recently, completely forgot about that when I disconnected it. I've moved the files back to the SSD, probably better to not move those again. Update went smoothly after doing so. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the feedback. There was nothing in the log file that mentioned C:\Windows\Installer. Well done for finding it.

ANyone know if there are any issues with the most recent release of the Plex Server App for windows?

I'm running Win 7 Home.

I've been running plex for a LONG time now and usually keep it up to date. So just last night finally decided to install the new server.

Downloaded the file, installed the new server, no errors, everything seemed ok, until we decided to watch something on our Roku.

The library never loads, it just sits there......

So I decided to check my PC. I loaded the Plex software on my PC and same thing, the library never loads.

SO I right clicked on the server icon on the taskbar, clicked media manager.... it brings up the broswer, but then that just sits and sits and never loads...

So I decided to uninstall and reinstall the server app.... it does the same thing....

I then decided to load the older version.... sadly I deleted the installer for that at some point, so went to the downlaods page and see that unless I'm a Plexpass member I can't download older versions.... ok.....

After that, and much testing and trying I finally went into system restore, and restored to a restore point before I installed the never version.... Now when windows loads, the Plex Server App briefly loads, and then crashes, every time. No error messages mind you, the icon appears in the taskbar and then goes away. I check the running process and services etc, and it's not there.

Can anyone help?

Like I said, I never get any installation errors, it appears to install just fine,

See if it writes to the log file before exiting. Plex Media Server.log

See if there are any Plex Media Server related exceptions logged to the Windows Application Event Log

Computer / Right Click 'Manage' / Event Viewer / Windows Logs / Application Event Log

Also if did a restore maybe you had App Local Data set to a path that does not exist.

So export this registry to a text file and examine it / upload it here as .txt file attachment - using 'More Reply Options' (you can obfuscate e-mail address/tokens):

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Plex, Inc.\Plex Media Server

With regards to your statement about access to old versions, non PlexPASS users should be able to download Plex Media Server 0.9.9.14

In fact if you are now on 0.9.8.x you can only go forward to 0.9.11.1 if you first upgrade to 0.9.9.14 and run on that for a few minutes

Ok, last entry for the Plex Media Server.log would be last night when I shut it down before installing the new update. Nothing since then... so certainly something is wrong.

I see nothing in the Application Event log for Plex either.

Apparenlty I didn't scroll down far enough in the list to see the version I could download! My humblest appologies.... I was indeed running 0.9.818....  DOH! Guess I hadn't updated in awhile....

So If I had seen that..... I think it would have solved all my issues!

I uninstalled the old, and installed 0.9.9.14 and everything appears back to normal!

Thanks for your assistance!  you are indeed quite helpful! Guess I should update a little more often as new versions arrive.

as the database got migrated now to 9.9.14 you should be able to upgrade to 0.9.11.1 now without any issue....

Okey.

Thanks for having replied.

A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.

After multiple installs, clean uninstalls, "resetting the system and frameworks and webclient bundles,"  I still keep getting this error.  I also CANNOT add libraries to my server.

This all started as a FRESH install on a brand new HP Windows 8.1 system.

logs attached...any help is greatly appreciated.

You should be able to search the forums for this text and find previously reported cases.
I believe most such issues are due to 3rd party security software eg anti virus.

Notice you have 2 active LAN interfaces. I suggest you start with Plex Media Server with just one interface and later introduce the extra LAN interface and see if Plex operates trouble free in such an environment

There is a support page for this . Sorry on phone can't easily search. Just search on support.plex.tv or forums - just need to retry to reset system and framework bundles first

Edit: See Support Page -  Error : A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server

PS: I see you have 2 Plex Media Servers on the network. This one (Jim-PC on 192.168.1.9) and also Plex Media Server named 'Videos' on 192.168.1.11

Be aware that there are port forwarding on the router needs to have a differetn WAN port for each but forwarding to the same LAN port (32400) for each

My problem is that I load Plex on my new desktop just fine, but it simply won't launch. It downloads and shows up on my list of programs, but nothing happens when I hit launch. I am running Windows 8.

Thank you!

Chuck Edwards

Never mind, I fixed it by setting up Norton firewall rules.
