Debugging setup failures

Hello All

Im sorry for raising this thread almost a year after it was last posted on but i didnt want to start a new one being a noob and get in trouble :P

I am brand new to plex but understand the HTPC/ media streaming world fairly well. Have been on rasbperry pi for awhile now running xbmc but as i just bought a new smart TV i wanted to take advantage of the plex app on my samsung 7series.

TV side seemed to set up just fine and i registered an account ok.

However when i moved across to my PC to install PMS, the problems began...

I downloaded PMS and installed ok. but then when i said "launch" directly after installation, nothing happened ... ?
I looked at task manager... no sign of process or app running.
I tried to repair.... error.
i tried uninstall... same error (i can post error if needed but will spare space for now)

I cannot find plex in start menu, program files, Appdata or registry...anywhere! .. ?
Yet it wont let me repair, uninstall or reinstall !!

Im so confused. Please help in anyway possible. im hurting at the thought of having to reinstall my OS just to get try again to get this running.

Many thanks!

You download Plex Media Server for Windows Computer from here: plex.tv/downloads

Version should be 0.9.11.1 currently

When you complete setup and launch it should start a Plex Media Server.exe (32-bit) process and you should be able to see it in Task Manager Process View.

It will now show in the applications view as it is a background process.

It should create a system tray icon

When you select this icon and right click on it, you get a pop up. On this pop-up is 'Media Manager'

When you click on it, it should run your default browser (you must have a default browser configured in control panel/default programs) and using the default browser it will go to one of these 2 urls:

localhost:32400/web

or

127.0.0.1:32400/web

depending on whether it is windows 8 or not

If you do not have a default browser, make sure one is set (you can google how to do that) and then re-run the setup

You should change the Folder Options in control panel so that you can view hidden files / folders and also view extensions of known file types

That will make it easier to locate the Plex Media Server.log file

There is wealth of information here: support.plex.tv

I am attempting to be a new user having just purchased a Blu-ray Player with DLNA capability and with a PC full of audio, video and image media. So I went to Plex.tv, registered and then downloaded the setup file for my PC -- a Windows 7 64-bit SP1. I have never had this much of a problem with installing software on my Windows 7 PCs. And this forum topic is overloaded with conflicting information.

First. the install file I got on the download was:

Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1101.678-c48ffd2-en-US.exe

That's a filename I haven't seen yet (although there is so much data on this topic, I could have missed it.) For example, just 8 days ago, sa2000 wrote "Version should be 0.9.11.1 currently." So why am I getting a different version? I mean, they're similar but this is a very technical issue we're trying to resolve. Why would it be said the version is 0.9.11.1 when I get 0.9.1101.678? That is not helpful and it makes me suspect I have an incorrect file.

Second, so for the 3rd or 4th time, I have uninstalled the app (via Control Panel), redownloaded, and reinstalled. Each time, I have gone to the Systray, right-clicked on the Plex icon and clicked on Media Manager and my browser sails off to to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web/index.html which is not a blooming thing except a blank screen with the logotype Plex in the center. It never does anything else and it has done exactly the same thing at least four times. I've even tried to decipher the HTML on this page but I have given up. The only thing I can guess is that some script that is supposed to do something is not functioning.

I've read all this troubleshooting guide about action to take such as creating an unintelligible install log and it hasn't helped me one iota. There is nothing wrong with my system; I install and uninstall software often and have NEVER had this kind of problem.

Beyond all that, I can't understand why the "Launch" of this product would take me to a website anyway. I'm trying to install a product to create a LOCAL server within my own house using my in-house router, not out in the hypersphere.

Unless someone can give me a straightforward answer that doesn't involve producing logs so big that folks are having problems attaching them to their forum comments, I'm going in search of some other DLNA products.

Yes the way version numbers are referred to is confusing and inconsistent with the file names. This is how it has been and until the Plex Team change how they refer to version numbes in their Release Notices or change the file name/properties we will continue to have this inconsistency. We got used to it and now take it for granted. For someone coming from the outside - it looks wrong and I agree with you on this,

So Plex Media Server 0.9.11.1 is Download Install File identified as 0.9.1101.678-c48ffd2 and is Download Install File Properties Product Details Version 0.9.1101.0 etc...

I will list here the version numbers showing:

Forum Release Notice and Forum Topics/Posts :  0.9.11.1

Download Install File Name:   0.9.1101.678-c48ffd2

Download Install File Properties Details File Version: 0.9.1101.0

Download Install File Properties Details Product Version: 0.9.1101

Plex Media Server.exe Properties File Version: 0.9.11.1

Plex Media Server.exe Properties Product Version: 0.9.11.1.678-c48ffd2

Plex Media Server.exe runs as a background process and Media Manager (also referred to as Plex/Web or Plex/Web App) is the front end / client application.

Media Manager is launched through the link in the Plex System Tray icon or directly in a browser by going to url:

localhost:32400/web

or 127.0.0.1:32400/web

or instead of the-local-ip-address:32400/web

eg 192.168.0.10:32400/web

Media Manager / Plex Web has two sets of functionality,

1. As the media manager for administering the Plex Media Server library

2. As a Plex Player to stream and access media

There are two versions of the media manager, one referred to as the Local Plex Web App - accessible and executed locally through the 3 url's I mentioned

and the other referred to as the plex.tv Plex Web App is executed on the plex.tv web site and can be reached through url

plex.tv/web

On first install of Plex Media Server when you click Launch, the library setup wizard is entered and this is web based using Media Manager interface. The setup wizard takes you through creation of Library Sections (now called Libraries) and adding media folders to the libraries.

Issues arise when security settings or added 3rd party software such as proxies interfere with the attempts to access 127.0.0.1:32400 and Plex/Web gets stuck

Also sometimes security software interferes with the setup of the plugin folders - referred to as the bundles and it has become quite common to have to reset the system and framework bundles and sometimes even the webclient.bundle

It is important that the firewall allows tcp port 32400

You mentioned DLNA but the DLNA interface and UI is very crude and if possible one should go for Plex own clients as players instead of DLNA

I installed Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1101.678-c48ffd2-en-US.exe and got these message at the first start of PMS. Now I need help!!!

A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.

It is a problem with the install / update to the bundles that appear to happen quite frequently these days and the cause is not known - although security software/anti-virus is often blamed.

The standard answer which does solve most of these is to Reset the System and Framework Bundles and the error message you received is so common now that it is covered by its own support page !

So please do that as per the steps in Resetting System and Framework Bundles - but at the same time also remove complications such as the extra network interfaces which may be some vpn or vm network interfaces or just additional network interfaces.

Plex Media Server should only see one active network interface as one cannot tell it which one to use for the connection to plex.tv via the open router port.

You can explore the introduction of vpns and extra network interfaces later on after researching these aspects on the forums.

The log shows 3 interfaces. It has detected the server on the first - so disable the 2nd and 3rd

The username is an admin user and the msi install looked like it was error free

So try one more time - just Reset the System and Framework Bundles

and if it fails again then the following

- Try a reboot

- Does the firewall have in advanced settings an Inbound Rule for tcp port 32400?

- What security / privacy / anti-virus software you are running?

- Any proxies (check Control panel / internet options / connect )

- Check the hosts file for any additions/changes

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

Edit: added hosts file checks

Many thanky for your help!
What I've done/tried:
- set up Portforwarding at the router TCP, UDP on port 32400
- Firewall free 64bit version of "Windows 8 firewall control"
"EnabledAll" for "Plex Media Server" & "Plex Media Server DLNA Service"
- Antivirus: TrendMicoOfficeScan 10.5.2251
- Hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost

I have not used '"windows 8 firewall control' . Is this the sphinx product?

Can you make sure there is an inbound rule in advanced setting in the firewall for tcp port 32400 for all network profiles. This is nothing to do with the rules for the program files for Plex

See http://windows.microsoft.com/en-gb/windows-8/windows-firewall-from-start-to-finish section on tcp ports

Also could you as a separate test if firewall change and reboot does not resolve, edit the hosts file to comment out the ipv6 localhost line and reboot

could be because an automatic update went wrong or some new security setting or 3rd party software such as Proxy Software interfering

But first you need to establish if Plex Media Server.exe process is actually running and has not crashed (check Task Manager Process View) and also the system tray Plex icon.

If it is running, then you could try Resetting System and Framework Bundles to see if that resolves the problem

If not, restart the Plex Media Server, wait 10 minutes then try to access it trying both

localhost:32400/web

and

127.0.0.1:32400/web

and trying with different browsers

If still an issue, upload the Plex Media Server.log and zip of the Logs\PMS Plugin Logs folder

contact the store you paid your $4.99 to. Obviously it is not a product for you.

You already had some advice from me on diagnostics here: https://forums.plex.tv/topic/128144-pms-not-working-since-latest-update/?p=770162

I got the message "A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server."  Attaching my logs.

Can anyone help with this?

The first thing to try for these errors is Resetting System & Framework Bundles. Follow the steps on that support page

I notice you are using Firefox. Make sure that NoScript Add-On is not installed (Related topic)

If problem persists, upload a fresh Plex Media Server.log and zip of a copy of Logs\PMS Plugin Logs folder

This error was seen before and was fixed by updating the windows root certificate - but this should be part of the standard set of Windows Updates

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/78356-windows-7-setup-failed-0x800b0109/

Is your system up to date with windows service packs and windows updates?

If not, please do and re-install

Other things to check:

Right click on the download being used for the install

C:\Users\Pappsen\Downloads\Plex-Media-Server-0.9.1101.678-c48ffd2-en-US.exe

and Select Properties and check that there is a Digital Signatures tab with an entry for Plex Inc.

Absence of either means this is an incomplete corrupt download. Should delete and re-download

Hi just tried to install Plex on my PC and got the following error code:

A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server.

Please visit the forums and provide your logs, as described here.

I have attached the log files as described above.

Thanks
