Debugging setup failures

Hi, Just thought I should send you these files after I removed the vpn ip addresses form the computer (not the router), hope it makes things clearer.

Not really getting anywhere with this.

The netstat output is same as before. We are listening to 0.0.0.0.32400 which is ok. Only 1 connection established to 127.0.0.1:32400 and that was for a chrome session. Netstat port numbers (the dynamic ones) would correspond to those in log files - so would be better to have complete set of evidence together : zipped plugins logs plus media server log. But i am not really getting further myself with this.

And you say you removed the vpn stuff but 23.21.182.24 is still showing in ipconfig. This was the clue to me that you had vpn http://superuser.com/questions/422754/how-does-circumventing-ip-restrictions-through-dns-work-in-the-case-of-hulu-com as the site gave the IP number you had in ipconfig /all

One last attempt for me - can you go through the repair of system and framework bundles again but this time also delete WebClient.bundle in step 3 here and do an extra restart

And so as not to lose sight of what we are debugging here - (because normally your type of error is not one handled in this thread - this thread is all about MSI errors) - it is that you cannot save new library sections - a problem that also manifests itself by having no Agents and is normally (so far) resolved by repairing broken/corrupt system and framework bundles.

i have a little different problem, i think, but this seems to be the place to broach it. This is the message i got:

A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex Media Server. Please visit the forums and provide your logs, as described here.

Now, i can give you all the logs, or just selected logs, since i am not sure which logs are problematic in such an obscure message, and i am quite certain i am not the first to receive this message, i would appreciate any tech-person's help.  thanks.

Initially lets not bother with logs. Almost all of these errors are fixed by repairing the System and Framework bundles and a restart,

Follow the steps here https://forums.plexapp.com/index.php/topic/28304-how-to-reset-the-system-bundle/

If this does not resolve the problem, zip the Plex Media Server.log, Plex Media Scanner.log and the folder Logs\PMS Plugin Logs and attach using More Reply Options

I can't even get my PC to generate the log. This is what I get:

sa2000, resetting bundles and system didn't help my PMS connect. Thanks for the tip tho!

The problem here was that you pasted the text exactly as it was showing in the first post of this thread. Needed to substitute the filename of the install exe downloaded for that in the shown example

sa2000, resetting bundles and system didn't help my PMS connect. Thanks for the tip tho!

Update; problem now resolved. Had a look at the system. Downloads used seemed ok. 60.1 Mb and with Digital Signature. Nevertheless decided to get fresh download from http://plex.tv/downloads so renamed the old downloaded files and got a new download. Checked file size 60.1 Mb and Digital Signature present. Using Mozilla Firefox on Windows 7 SP1 64-bit machine

Shut down Plex Media Server through system tray Plex icon : Exit

One thing noticed and may have been a factor is that Plex processes did not shut down immediately. The Plex Media Scanner.exe continued to run and show in Task Manager for at least another 30-40 seconds. So may be some upgrade issues are to do with the upgrade commencing when there are active Plex processes still running.

Anyway so waited for Plex Media Scanner process to terminate and then proceeded with the upgrade.

Ran the installer for PMS 0.9.8.18 twice. First time selecting the Uninstall option and on completion ran it again and selected Install.

The install was successful.

So may be the following points are important for all upgrades:

1. Check file size of install file

2. Check file for Digital Signature from Plex Inc

3. Shut down Plex Media Server and wait for all processes to terminate

4. Commence with the upgrade

New Problem: PMS 0.9.8.18 on Windows 8 - Fresh Install - Setup not completing and browser loads on every restart

We have very good diagnostics captured here https://forums.plex.tv/topic/91968-error-you-dont-have-any-media-servers-yet/?p=535937

Problem reported by 2 users.

I am guessing that the issue could be to do with the domain changes from plexapp.com to plex.tv

Diagnostics captured needs to be looked into by mfeingol

We have registry export, full comprehensive msi logs, PMS log and screenshot showing loading of setup page on browser on start

Just tried to iinstall PMS on my HTPC running Vista. Shortly after launching the installer, a dialogue box opens with pms.exe in the filename section and when I click "Open" I get a file not found error message. I then click cancel and the log file is below. Attached is a screenshot of the dialogue box. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Almost all such install issues in the past 2 weeks have been due to incomplete corrupt download file. Please check that the downloaded file has a Digital Signature from Plex Inc. Do that by looking at File Properties (right click/properties) and see if there is a Digital Signature tab. The file size should be 60.1 Mb

If you are getting incomplete downloads, get details of the download server at the time by doing

Start / Run / Cmd

nslookup downloads.plexapp.com

and paste the results in a post here

Then keep on retrying until you get a full download file

Hi there-- I'm running Windows 7 SP1 and I can't seem in get the latest Plex Media Server installed on my machine.

I have tried all logical steps to install, but I keep getting the same error message:

Could not write value Plex Media Server to key \Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.

Verify if you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

As a result, then I get an error when starting the program. Any suggestions?

Would like you to right click on your download file for Plex Media Server

C:\Users\patrick\Downloads\Plex-Media-Server-0.9.818.290-11b7fdd-en-US (1).exe

and select Properties

and tell me if you see a Digital Signatures Tab with Plex Inc showing for the certificate?

If there is no Digital Signature tab for Plex Inc then delete all downloads and do a fresh download from http://plex.tv/downloads

See my post #89 above and follow the advice

If there is a Digital Signature tab and it shows it is from Plex Inc then do the following:

Shut down Plex Media Server if it running (make sure Task Manager shows no active Plex processes)

Right Click on the download file for Plex Media Server and click on 'Run As Administrator' and accept any confirmation prompts

If it still fails repeat this with all antivirus disabled

Sorry about this, listed my problem, but figured it out - can't delete the post - but it was my firewall causing me all the trouble! Will probably need help with the firewall settings in Win 8 being managed by McAfee - set to turn back on in a few minutes.

Any tips on this firewall configuration will be most appreciated.

What i dont understand is the fact that you pay for this plex server on your phone yet you cant access anything. then you come on the computer and it tells you to get a subscription. isnt that what i just paid for. This is the most confusing site.

Hi,

I'm trying to install Plex on a Windows XP SP3 system. I click on the exe file, the wizard opens, it starts the installation, but then when it gets to the "pms" file, the file name pops up in a windows box that has choices for OPEN or CANCEL. When I click on "OPEN," I get an error message saving "pms.exe does not exist."

If you are kind enough to reply to help me, please use complete sentences and please don't assume I know ANYTHING about computer code, etc. I usually don't understand most of the forum discussions for any computer-related thing because they're full of jargon and based on an assumption of what seems to me a great deal of knowledge about computers. So thanks for being patient and helping me out with this.

There are a number of potential problems on XP.

1. The hardware is not supported. Need to find out what processor is in use

Clicking on My Computer and Right Click and selecting Properties should show the processor information

Basically the processor needs to support what is referred to as SSE2

This wikipedia page gives a list of processors that support that

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE2

2. XP must be at Service Pack 3 level

3. To install Plex Media Server need to ensure that Microsoft Patch : Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable

http://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/download/details.aspx?id=8483

4. We have had issues with downloads of Plex Media Server getting corrupted or is incomplete. When Plex Media Server is downloaded (from http://plex.tv/downloads ) should check file properties of the download file and see if there is a Digital Signatures tab and in that tab there is Plex Inc Digital Certificate showing

This is ridiculous. So what if Plex is free - the incredible headaches with trying to install it is putting me off it entirely, let alone the fact that I had thought I'd install it, check it out, and then probably buy the premium version. I'm not thinking that way anymore.

I have Windows XP SP3. No way could I get the Plex software to download from the plex site - not on Firefox, not on IE - I didn't try chrome, since I'd read many posts that that browser was the worst for downloading this software. Then I found a post saying that CNET had Plex to download, and it worked. So I did that. In fact, it downloaded. But then I got the same error message  - "A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex. Please visit the forums and provide your logs, as described here."   And when I go to the description, I get instructions written for a computer geek. How do I get to a command prompt? What the heck am I doing once I get there? And then someone who did generate a log posted the whole thing on here - if we all did that, you'd never be able to get to the bottom of the forum. Maybe that's the point, eh? I can't imagine I'm having a terribly different issue from eveyone else, so I'm not wasting any more time trying to figure out things for Plex.

If someone can tell me how to get this working, that would be great. If not, I'm done with Plex.

Well you have gone beyond the install and setup stage

Normally fixing the error "A problem has been detected with a core component of Plex" is easy for most cases - by following the steps in the first post here

https://forums.plex.tv/topic/28304-how-to-reset-the-system-bundle/

This does does not even mention the windows command line prompt (Start key / Run / typing command: cmd)

OK for step1 to Quit Plex Media Server, click on the system tray Plex icon, right click and select Exit

The rest of the steps should be very straightforward

You checked your cnet download file having the right signatures? Right Click on the downloaded install file, and seeing that there is a 'Digital Signatures' tab and Certificate from Plex Inc

I am told that a problem has been fixed on the download servers.

I Get the following error log when i try to install can someone please help i have also included my second and third attempt in attached files
