Loads of posts of similar failure. The recent issues have been almost all to do with corrupt / incomplete download file. Right click on the downloaded install file and check File Properties for presence of a 'Digital Signatures' tab with Certificate from 'Plex Inc'. If not present then the file is incomplete and you need to keep on trying to download a full file. The size for 0.9.8.18 should be 60.1 Mb. If it is this problem, report on which downloads server you are getting it from by doing

start / run / cmd

nslookup downloads.plexapp.com

and if persists change the browser you use to download. Google Chrome has been seen to be bad and IE11 ok for this issue

The other main reason for failure for Windows 8 has been to do with the firewall. The Plex Media Server installation code makes changes to the firewall to add exceptions for Plex Media Server and the setup fails when the Windows Firewall is disabled. So check this out as well after you check on the size and signature

Plex Media Server_20140314110812.log (5.1 KB)I have searched and hopefully have not overlooked the "setup failed" issue I am having with the latest Plex Server update (Plex-Media-Server-0.9.907.429-f80a8d6-en-US)  I am guessing.. and only guessing it may be an issue with Windows Firewall turned off on Win8.. I have corporate Symantec Endpoint protection to handle any firewall issues, that keeps Windows Firewall de-activated and unable to turn on.  I have been running Plex for over a year and never had any issues before.. I am leery to Uninstall to try a new installation if it will fail and I will be Plex-less.... not good.. I can attach my log - hopefully this will shed some light..  Thanks for any help..

There are 2 msi log files. This one and a very big one. It is the very big log file that has the underlying error information

The log file would be named

Plex Media Server_20140314110812_0_pms.log

It could be one of two issues : windows 8 firewall update failing because it is not active or a corrupt incomplete download. You can check this by looking for Digital Signatures tab in file properties and Plex Inc certificate showing

Thanks for the quick reply sa2000 - is there a certain part of this huge file to focus on?  Guessing we do not post a 16mb file here...

Edit*** It was a issue with the Plex program needing windows firewall running.. I had to temporarily turn of my firewall in Symantec Endpoint Corporate and start the Windows Firewall service in services.msc manually.. Once installed I stopped windows firewall services and fixed Symantec back to doing its job..  Guessing this was an oversight? I have quite a few other programs that are server related that get updated and I never have to jump through these hoops to do a simple install/upgrade.. anyway.. I am on the latest and greatest for now...

So the firewall issue is still with us !!

Zipped and upload to Dropbox with link here would be the way to get the big log files etc...

Installation errors repeatedly for Plex-Media-Server-0.9.907.429-f80a8d6-en-US on my windows 7 machine with the error code 2330. Made sure the file was the right size and had a digital signature. Also kept my windows firewall on or off to see if that was a problem. Latest log is attached.

There should be another log file - much bigger which would have the underlying error that led to the "Error 0x80070643: Failed to install MSI package."

C:\Users\Bryan\AppData\Local\Temp\Plex Media Server_20140323210338_0_pms.log

Error 2330 means :

			<p>2330</p>

			<p>Error getting file attributes: [3]. GetLastError: [2].</p>

Could be some permissions issue and the other log file may give an indication as to which file it relates to

If you don;t manage to resolve the problem, zip the other log file and upload to Dropbox (or similar service) and share link here

Look for the errors after the time of 21:03:41

You could break the task by uninstalling Plex Media Server 0.9.8.18 yourself and then install 0.9.9.7. When running the installer make sure you select 'Run As Administrator'

I am off on holiday so someone else will need to step in if the problem does not get resolved and you come with the two corresponding msi log files

(Win. 8.1, PMS 0.97)

At the beginning of install I am prompted for a .pms file, and when I cancel (since I don't know what it is or where it is or why I'm being asked) installation cancels out.  Here are what I hope are the relevant parts of the log, after all the parts that prepare for setup, and before the cancelled by user stuff.

Most of these setup errors over the past few months have been caused by an incomplete download. So suggest we eliminate that first.

You have not said if you checked that already. Just right click on the download file Plex-Media-Server-0.9.907.429-f80a8d6-en-US.exe and click on Properties and see if there is a Digital Signatures tab and a Certificate from Plex Inc. Incomplete downloads would not have that.

When I tried to install on my Windows XP PC, I got the error message that "Setup Failed"  The text said "One or more issues caused the setup to fail. Please fix the issues and retry setup...0x8007064d- THis installation package cannot be installed by the Windows Installer Service. You must install a service pack that contains a newer version of the Windows Installer Service."

I checked the Microsoft site and Windows Installer 5.0 is supposedly not compatible with Windows XP. I did not try to download it anyway.

Can you help me install your excellent product?  My log is below.

Is it not late in the day to start on XP? Only a few weeks left

See my Post #110 above

If it is this problem, delete the download and try again - best to switch to IE11 if using Chrome

It is not then we will need the more detailed log file.

What is the OS Version?

Hi, trying to install plex server and getting install failure.  Could you please assist, here is my log file.  I have tried downloading in Chrome and IE, both are 60.1 mb and both have digital signatures.

Is this for Windows 8? If it is then it could be the firewall issue which you can see as the first hit when you google search: plex  Error 0x80070643

See https://forums.plex.tv/topic/74359-plex-media-server-0980282-b32b611-en-usexe-installation-error/

If it is not this then will need the large detailed msi log file and you will need to upload elsewhere and link here eg on Dropbox

The detailed log file is C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\Plex Media Server_20140419221106_0_pms.log

But please check that the windows firewall is enabled and if it was not, enable it, restart and then rerun the Install

Hi, thanks for the quick response.  I am running windows 8.  Attached are two links from dropbox, one is a pic showing my windows firewall is on and the other is the log.  The log is quite small though.

That is a tiny msi log !

The only hit I found on the message in this log file (MainEngineThread is returning 1603) was this old thread which was thought to be due to not running in elevated mode but was fixed subsequently.

When you ran the install did you right click on it and select 'Run As Administrator'? If not, could you try that and see what happens. If it fails again, please upload both log files:

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\Plex Media Server_yyyymmddhhmmss_0_pms.log

C:\Users\David\AppData\Local\Temp\Plex Media Server_yyyymmddhhmmss.log

Doing a general google search for "MainEngineThread is returning 1603" "Windows 8" in relation to other products msi install failures shows these possible causes:

I was searching on google earlier today and found someone that fixed their problem with Microsoft Onecare removal kit.  I have never run Onecare on this computer, but figured I would give it a try anyway and it worked.  Not really sure what it fixed, but it's loaded first time after.

Thanks for all your help !!!

Windows Live Onecare is an old Microsoft AntiVirus security solution pre-dates the Windows Security Essentials. Very strange. Anyway all ok now.
